How to Give Your Home a 12-Month Makeover in 2016
You would love to give your home a mini-makeover this year, but you don’t know where to start. We feel your pain. That’s why we took it upon ourselves to break down each aspect of a home makeover into monthly tasks according to seasonal needs. Better yet, we dug deep to find out when is the best time to buy what (with a little help from our friends at Lifehacker). Starting with a really simple task you can tackle this weekend, you’ll be on your way to a complete home refresh. No more procrastinating. Scroll on for our month-by-month guide to a full home makeover.
First things first, make a plan. Walk around your home, and jot down all the goals you want to achieve for the year in no particular order (you’ll slot them into the categories below later). Then give your home a clean sweep. Edit down to the bare minimum, and donate everything you don’t really use to charity. Your karma will be set for the year.
Best time to buy: furniture, linens, bedding, carpeting, and flooring.
It’s Super Bowl season, which means televisions will be on major sale! Take the opportunity to spiff up your living room. Refresh pillows and throws, give your coffee table a quick lift with coffee table books and trays, and make sure every remote or device has its own storage spot.
Best time to buy: televisions and electronics.
Dive into a Marie Kondo book and organize your home from top to bottom. Be really thorough when planning your organization system. When putting it in place, give your home a good spring cleaning at the same time to really start fresh.
Best time to buy: luggage (or save up for future sale seasons)!
You know those years when mid-July rolls around and you realize you still haven’t dusted off your outdoor furniture? Don’t let that happen; prep your outdoor décor early. Now is time to dream up that string light installation or shop for a pretty outdoor rug. You’ll be ready to hit the (literal) deck as soon as the rays start shining.

Because bedroom bliss starts with a great mattress, take advantage of the spring mattress sales to upgrade any bedroom in the house that needs it. Take the opportunity to decorate an underused guest bedroom or to give your own master bedroom a makeover.
Best time to buy: mattresses, refrigerators, and office furniture.
The combination of graduation sales and wedding season means you’ll score some great deals on dishware this month. Upgrade your tabletop essentials, get some new glassware, and set yourself up with some great serving pieces. You’ll be ready to throw a summer soirée in no time.
Best time to buy: dishware.
Most furniture and décor collections are released in February and August, so there are deals to be made in January and July. Shop around for big-ticket items in the months leading up to these big sales, and be ready to drop the credit card when July comes.
Best month to buy: furniture and home décor.
Take advantage of back-to-school promotions to breathe new life into your home office. Organize your paperwork, get a new desk lamp, create a gallery wall—whatever will get your juices flowing once September rolls around.
Best month to buy: linens, storage containers, office furniture, and office supplies.
You don’t need to go through a full-blown renovation to give your kitchen and bathrooms a little lift. Take some time in September to upgrade any aging appliances, and get ready for the holidays ahead of time by investing in quality cookware and kitchen accessories. Accessorize all rooms with pretty linens, soaps, candles, and fresh flowers.

Before the holiday madness, walk through your home and identify any area in need of some TLC. Now is the time to replace any rugs or curtains that look a little tired. Sit in every sofa and chair and make sure you have an accent table nearby to put down your drink. Make sure the fireplace has all the tools and utensils it needs. Replace any lighting that you’re not crazy about. Hang the art that you’ve been meaning to put up for a while.

Address your dining room in November, and get it ready for entertaining season. Steam-clean your curtains if needed. Make sure your rug is big enough to accommodate the table and all chairs. Do you have a buffet or console for entertaining? Maybe you’ve been wanting to wallpaper for a while? Now is the time, go for it!
Best time to buy: appliances, televisions, electronics, and essentially everything else on Black Friday/Cyber Monday.
