DOSSIER: NAME: Jake and Carly Bobek TRADE: Real estate agent and attorney, respectively. VIBE: Spa-like, approachable comfort. ABODE: Renovated 1939 cottage close to the beach.Los Angeles-based designer Kate Strickland of West Haddon Hall faced a personal challenge when beginning to work with her clients, Jake and Carly Bobek. At the beginning of the collaboration, the designer felt her taste leaned toward a bolder, broader mix of styles, while her clients were more traditional in taste. "Their clear and rather reserved viewpoint helped me uphold a great deal of consistency and understatement in their space," Strickland shares. By combining forces and preferences, the group was able to create a serene environment perfect for the couple to grow into.

Strickland became fast friends with her clients, a young couple who had lived in their home for a year and a half before beginning the decorating process. "It was a bittersweet day for us all when we finished the project and no longer got to be in close communication all the time," the designer shares. Over a period of ten months, the trio took their time with the design, first selecting larger pieces, then completed each room with a trip to the flea market for smaller items and accessories. "I think taking your time and collecting slowly is the most natural way to decorate a home."

"The clients wanted the space to feel light, calming, and serene with a nod to their proximity to the beach," Strickland shares. Due to the living room's impressive number of large-scale windows, Strickland was left with little wall space for art and décor. To compensate, the designer incorporated an oversize brass mirror above the mantle to reflect the sunlight and enhance the airiness of the space. Though the home was beautifully renovated before the Bobeks moved in, Stickland still encouraged her clients to update the paint colors and introduce a fresh perspective with new hardware and light fixtures.

The designer names the master bedroom her favorite space. "It is just divine," Strickland exclaims. "I loved the idea of hand-painting stripes in the bedroom but didn't want the look to go too shabby." To balance the delicate sweetness of the stripes, the designer opted to mix in black and brass elements to give the room some edge. A well-balanced, approachable design with subtle nods to the home's beachy locale? Serene indeed.
