Meet Hawkeye Huey, the 5-year-old photographer whose Instagram account Rolling Stone labeled the 40th best of all time. When Hawkeye was 4, his dad, Aaron—a photographer for National Geographic—gave him his first instant camera. The goal was to teach Hawkeye the art of picture making without a smartphone screen. Aaron’s tactics clearly worked. After the father/son duo embarked on an 18-month exploration of the American West, Hawkeye’s Instagram following ballooned to over 160, 000. He also raised over $47,000 on Kickstarter to fund his photography book project, Cowboys Indians Hobos Gamblers Patriots Tourists and Sunsets. Aaron describes the project as a “knee-high perspective of desert dwellers and tumbleweeds” that is “a new addition to the tradition of documenting the American West.” Check out a few of Hawkeye’s signature shots below.
