Don't Buy Makeup With These 2 Ingredients if You Have Acne-Prone Skin

Updated 01/31/18

I have an arsenal of beauty products I turn to when trying to conceal a breakout. But as years of experience have taught me, layering on the heavy foundation and concealer in an attempt to mask acne often leads to more acne. This common predicament is what led Insider to consult a team of dermatologists on the best makeup brands for acne-prone skin (plus the key ingredients to look for and avoid).

Generally speaking, they suggest buying makeup with salicylic acid and oil-free formulas and avoiding products with silicones or mica. "Unless they contain salicylic acid, I generally recommend avoiding heavy liquid foundation makeups, which can trap dirt and oil and block pores, leading to breakouts," dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, told the publication. Conversely, "silicones can block pores and make it more likely to break out or get bumpy," added dermatologist Debra Jaliman, MD. "Mica in powder makeup can irritate sensitive skin. The particles can be rough."

In terms of drugstore brands, both Zeichner and Jaliman agree that Neutrogena Skinclearing Makeup ($10) is a great option for breakout-prone skin since it's oil-free and contains salicylic acid. For something more high-end, Jaliman recommends Almay Clear Complexion Blemish Healing Liquid Makeup ($18) or Clinique Acne Solutions Liquid Makeup ($37).
