Adventurous Things to Do Next Time You're Feeling Stuck

Adventurous Things to Do

Oftentimes, when we're feeling restless or stuck in a rut, it's because we need to make a change in our lives. And that's a lot easier said than done, especially because some changes are bigger than others. Whether you only need to switch things up a little to regenerate and reboot your attitude or you know you're on the way to a pivotal mental transformation that'll catalyze a ton of major changes, it's always a good idea to start with smaller challenges to occupy your mind with something productive as well as help you decide what you want your future to look like.

To help you start thinking about all the tiny ways you can switch up your routine to trigger self-discovery and even just have some fun and excitement, we made a list of 12 things to try every day (or save it for the weekend if you're short on time). We categorized our ideas from approachable and slight to large and transformational. So scroll through our list of adventurous things to do starting now, and add any or all of the ones that resonate with you to your to-do list. We promise you'll never be bored again.

Small Challenges and Adventures:

  • Read a book that challenges you to work on self-improvement that you have been afraid to confront. A few examples are Crucial Conversations, Fooled by Randomness, Thinking Fast and Slow, and Daring Greatly
  • Ask a new acquaintance from work to grab a cup of coffee. You can also ask a mutual friend you've been intrigued by or someone you struck up a conversation with on the street. You never know what kind of connections you'll make or what you'll learn from one another, and reaching out is both the hardest and easiest part. Or if you see someone sitting alone at a restaurant, ask them if they want to join you. Or maybe eating a meal out alone is your challenge, and you simply enjoy it by yourself.
  • Invite your friends to do something outside the box with you this weekend instead of your normal drinks and dinner routine (or whatever is normal for you). Some things include visiting museums, farmers markets, art galleries, comedy shows, walking through a park, going for a hike, packing a picnic, or heading to a flea market.
  • Leave your phone at home, and go explore a new neighborhood or a nearby destination. Being unplugged will allow your mind to wander, and it's probably something you don't often do. You could even consider taking public transportation to a random spot and seeing where you end up.

Medium Challenges and Adventures

  • Learn a new language, or brush up your skills from a language you learned.
  • Go skydiving. It sounds cliché, but this daredevil activity can be exhilarating, and the physical sensation and the adrenaline rush might be just what you've been craving.
  • Plan a weekend getaway, whether you choose to go with friends or alone, camping or luxe vacationing. Just make sure it's different from what you'd normally do.
  • Host an event, or build a community that interests you. Personally, I've been wanting to organize a small writer's workshop or an open-mic group that's intimate yet big enough to feel like a challenge.

Large Challenges and Adventures:

  • Move to a new city, or at least starting thinking about where you would go, how you're going to get there, and what you'll do once you arrive.
  • Organize a big trip you've been dying to take. And we don't just mean a weekend spa retreat. This can mean a tour around the world or spending months driving across the country and getting to know unexpected landscapes and communities along the way.
  • If your resentment for your workplace is starting to eat away at you, consider a career change. If you aren't sure about this yet or you don't have the financial means right now, at least start the search, and fill your free time getting in touch with your passions and hobbies.
  • Are you feeling bogged down by your current relationship status? Identify why you're unhappy with your love life, and try something new to see if that helps. Maybe you need to try dating other kinds of people or maybe you haven't been dating at all. This may not be the fix you're looking for, but it won't hurt to try. Of course, this will look different for anyone with a partner, but the same idea of confronting the issue at hand is always a good place to start moving forward.
