If you met Alyce Tran—creative director and CEO of the chic customizable accessories brand The Daily Edited—today, you might be surprised to learn that she started her professional life, not in fashion or merchandising, but in law. She jumped from law school to working for a supreme court judge and then to an international corporate law firm. On paper, it sounds like she had it all figured out, but Tran knew there was something else out there or her.
“I realized pretty quickly after starting work at a law firm that it wasn’t quite for me,“ she tells MyDomaine. Lucky for her, she met a co-worker who shared her love of fashion and design, and the two launched a blog together as a simple escape from their day-to-day lives. Little did they know it would soon blossom into the wildly successful accessories brand that The Daily Edited is today.
Ahead, we ask the career-pivoting creative about leaving her traditional career in law to pursue her passions. Find out how she learned not to settle for anything less than absolutely loving her job.
Tell us about your first career path.
I actually started my career as an attorney. I worked for a supreme court judge straight out of law school and then went to work at an international corporate law firm.
How did you make the transition from being an attorney to launching an accessories brand?
I realized pretty quickly after starting work at a law firm that it wasn’t quite for me. I wasn’t sure what else I could do, but I persevered in any event as I had put so much time and energy into becoming a lawyer so to speak. I then met my co-founder Tania Liu, another lawyer, and we got talking about our love of fashion, among other things, and became friends. We launched The Daily Edited as a blog, a place where we posted about things we liked on a daily basis from food to fashion to travel; it was a nice escape from the day-to-day work we were doing as attorneys. We then decided to launch a clothing line that didn’t go so well, sold under the label Edited. We launched a small accessories line in August 2014, which consisted of three products in three different colorways. I posted a picture of the products on Instagram, and the whole thing just blew up. We haven’t looked back since!
Tell us about your current career path.
I’m now the creative director and CEO of The Daily Edited. I manage the everyday operations of the business, marketing, product planning, and overall strategic direction of the business. Our business has grown immensely in our local market in Australia, and we are now in the process of building out our business in the U.S. It’s an extremely fun time for us.
What have been the biggest challenges in your many careers and why?
My work has always been all-encompassing. I worked very hard as an attorney, and now I work very hard on The Daily Edited—it’s seven days a week and no holidays. The challenge is balancing this with a normal life.
Why is your current path suitable for your personality?
In having my own business, I finally feel like I am doing something that I am good at and that isn’t mentally challenging. It seems to be the right path as now my work comes to me naturally, and I don’t feel worried that I am doing the wrong thing.
How did you move past the fear of change to pursue your passion?
I just thought about how great it would be to manage my own time and be in charge of my own future and success.
What are some mistakes you made along the way that ended up helping your success?
I suppose not knowing anything specific about product design, manufacturing, or retail has enabled us to solve problems in our own most logical way, which has enabled us to break the mold in the contemporary accessories space. We are a direct-to-consumer brand, which has enabled us to very tightly control our quality, messaging, and end customer experience, which I believe has added greatly to the success of the brand.
What do you love most about your current role and why?
I love being creative. Not many people know this, but I actually create all of the visual content that TDE outputs from our Instagram posts and stories, printed collateral, content, and imagery on our site. I am very heavily involved in our physical store designs (that I need to outsource to architects otherwise I probably would do it myself) and the design of our products and packaging.
When you look back and reflect on your previous career, do you have any regrets? Or are you still really happy with your decision?
I am absolutely happy with my decision. I am so grateful that I get to do what I love!
What is your message for other young women looking to launch their creative passion project?
Start it small and as a side hustle, test the concept and make sure it works. If it sticks, go for it.
