This Lakeside Home Is a Summertime Dream

by Liz Lynch

This family home designed by Heather Garrett was made for entertaining—literally. Located on Lake Gaston in North Carolina, the home features an expansive wrap-around porch, natural-look swimming pool, and the pièce de résistance, a party pavilion built on what would be a boat dock. Multiple outdoor lounging and dining spaces make the home feel like a resort and can accommodate some pretty epic summer soirées. The second residence of a young entrepreneurial couple based in Chapel Hill, the new construction home is situated on two lots enabling for plenty of space to relax and host friends and family.

Most residences on Lake Gaston have a boat dock and since the owners purchased a double lot, they were lucky enough to be able to accommodate a functional boat dock as well as a pavilion the owners refer to as the “party deck.” “We literally designed this to be a floating lounge,” Garrett tells us. “It has a huge TV, swimming dock (they're wakeboarding fanatics), and a wet bar complete with kegerator.”

Heavy use of outdoor fabrics enable the exterior lounge areas to have a cozy, intimate vibe. “Everything is upholstered in Sunbrella, including the outdoor drapery, which all gets a heavy hose-down in advance of every visit,” the designer tells us. “They nap, lounge, party, and relax there. I'm told the lake is a jet ski drag strip on the weekends, so it’s perfect for spectator seating!”

A neutral palette keeps the space fresh, clean and relaxed. Hanging chairs and an expansive hammock add to the serene surroundings. Nautical-influenced rope tiebacks keep the flowing drapery panels in check.

Garrett worked with the home’s builder to modify an existing plan for the pool to make it seamlessly blend-in with the natural surroundings. “The colors of that underwater pool tile were carefully grouped, so that the daytime reflection would look as if the water and lake merged into one horizon,” the designer tells us. “It's incredible how dramatically the tile choice can change the entire feeling of the water in a swimming pool!”

The main house’s porch features an outdoor living room complete with exterior fireplace. “During the fall and spring, it's a perfect spot to be in front of the fire,” says Garrett.

Working with such a fun and enthusiastic couple was a joy for Garrett and her team. “What I love about these young clients is that they really don't care about ‘normal’ at all,” the designer says. “And I'm weird to begin with!” If a stunning pool, multiple outdoor living rooms, and floating party deck are weird, we never want to be normal.
