It’s no secret that we’re in awe of the relationship between Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. They have such a strong partnership, and their love for one another and their six children is inspiring, to say the least. But in the last couple of years, we were especially blown away by Jolie’s decision to have a double mastectomy and her ovaries removed, as well as her choice to make the invasive procedures a public matter.
Her New York Times article last spring shows how the actress, humanitarian, and mother is an honest depiction of female strength and vulnerability. “I went through what I imagine thousands of other women have felt,” writes Jolie. “I told myself to stay calm, to be strong, and that I had no reason to think I wouldn’t live to see my children grow up and to meet my grandchildren.”
Jolie and Pitt are currently on a publicity tour for their soon-to-be-released film, By the Sea, a production that Jolie wrote, directed, produced, and stars in with her partner of 10 years, and they gave a rare joint interview with Tom Brokaw on the Today show. In the interview, the power duo talks about the stability of their relationship, Jolie’s lack of cooking skills, and the courageous decision the actress made to have her breasts and ovaries removed.
Jolie tells Brokaw about her husband’s unwavering support: “I knew through the surgeries that he was on my side and that this wasn’t something where I was going to feel less of a woman, because my husband wasn’t going to let that happen.”
Pitt adds, “Whatever’s got to be done to keep the family together, and keep the family together as long as possible, is going to be done. This was her charge, no question.”
We’d love Jolie and Pitt to make a film together every 10 years; seeing their chemistry on screen is electric.
