When it comes to anti-aging supplements, there's no magic little pill that can freeze time and its effects on our bodies. That being said, we're of the belief that the natural process of aging should be embraced—but that doesn't mean we're against making the most of modern science and supplements to help us live our best life (and give our skin a youthful-looking boost).
To find out more about the skin-saving supplements we should be adding to our healthy living regimen, we reached out to wellness expert and Philosophie founder Sophie Jaffe. "I'm a huge believer in using superfoods for combating the signs of aging," Jaffe tells us. In addition to eating a balanced diet, she explains that "drinking tons of water, finding an exercise you love, and having supportive friends and family" are also key to looking and feeling young.
Below, see her favorite supplements for help fight wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of aging, plus recommendations from other experts.
"Stress wreaks havoc on our skin, as well as a toxic or unhealthy environment—whether that be work or home," Jaffe tells us. She recommends using cacao (the raw form of chocolate), as an anti-aging supplement in your diet "as a natural bliss enhancer to fight off stress from the busy workday. Antioxidants in chocolate called cocoa flavanols act directly on the brain to reduce age-related cognitive decline. Regular consumption also has positive effects on facial wrinkles and elasticity."
This amino acid has been shown to decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, according to a study published in the Journal of Dermatologic Treatment. Patricia Farris MD, a clinical associate professor of dermatology at Tulane University, explains that "glucosamine is a building block for skin-plumping hyaluronic acid," which allows it to hydrate the skin and help wounds heal quicker.
Rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, fish oil "is a game changer in the fight against wrinkles," says Jaffe. Keeping the skin hydrated is a major focus in natural wellness skincare regimen. "When your skin is dried out, that's when those fine lines creep in [and] a great quality fish oil [will help keep] skin moisturized."
