You may not be a movie star, but sometimes your schedule can feel just as daunting as any one of Hollywood’s A-listers. With work and familial obligations usually taking priority above all else, finding the time to squeeze in a workout can be tough. That’s where Ashley Borden comes in. The celebrity trainer has crafted a 21-day home training program that has helped stars like Ryan Gosling, Christina Aguilera, and Reese Witherspoon stay in shape. Thanks to the fine folks at Well + Good, we now have insight into what makes Borden’s home workout so effective.

According to Borden, maintaining proper form when doing even the most basic exercises is crucial to maximizing your workout. They’re moves used in virtually every fitness class,” she says of push-ups, squats and lunges, adding that so many people “do them incorrectly.” Borden recommends reading about the mechanics of the exercises you’re doing, then checking yourself out in the mirror while working out and making the appropriate adjustments.

Despite using the mirror to make sure you’re exercising properly, Borden suggest not becoming too attached to looking at yourself while you exercise. “Mirrors are meant for people to correct their form, but what I’ve seen is that people don’t focus on what they’re doing right or wrong—they focus on things about their body they don’t like and what want to fix, and that isn’t helpful.”

Finally, if you’re looking for the perfect tool to help you maximize your workout, Borden suggests using foam rolling. “It’s especially important to do if you sit in front of a computer all day,” she says of the exercise, which is good for both muscle movement and circulation. “Plus, it just feels so, so good.”
