It’s been reported that President Obama gets an average of five hours of sleep a night. Since the normal adult needs seven to nine hours of sleep a night to be fully functional throughout the course of the day, Obama’s morning routine is crucial. To find out how the president maximizes his mornings, Business Insider spoke to his former personal aide, Reggie Love.
According to Love, Obama begins his day with a 45-minute workout that can include strength training and cardio. Since he doesn’t drink coffee, Obama prefers water, green tea, or orange juice while making the tiny but necessary decisions, like which clothes he’ll wear or what he’ll eat throughout the day.
To find out how the POTUS’s morning routine would affect the average person, Business Insider’s Anisa Purbasari decided to follow his routine for a week. Here’s what she learned:
Working out in the morning sets the tone for the rest of the day. Despite it sometimes feeling like “shock therapy,” Purbasari found that feeling like she “had accomplished something really challenging first thing in the morning” was worth the effort.
The importance of willpower can’t be overstated. As the leader of the free world, President Obama doesn’t have the luxury of avoiding his tasks even for one day. But according to Purbasari, the rest of us have to train our willpower like any other muscle. “Mental toughness needs to be nurtured constantly,” she writes.
