Planning a bedroom layout does not come intuitively for everyone. Just like a good sense of direction is not a given, spatial organization can be a tricky skill to master. The basics are easy: You typically start with one bed and flanking bedside tables. But what about the awkward corners? What if the room doesn't fit two nightstands or a dresser? What if the room is extra long and leaves a lot of dead space? Where should the rug be positioned in the room?

Achieving the perfect bedroom layout is easier said than done but, with a few basic rules, you can optimize your bedroom setting to create your ideal room. That's why we came up with a few basic layout ideas for bedrooms that can help you nail down your floor plan without breaking a sweat. From tackling clutter in your tiny bedroom to filling awkward corners in your cavernous master suite, consider this your roadmap on bedroom layouts you'll love.

The Layout: If your bedroom layout is barely big enough to fit a bed, there are a few hacks that will help you manage the space. While we don’t love pushing a bed against the wall, try leaving as little room as possible on one side—this will leave more space on the other for a larger bedside chest. A floating shelf on the opposite side works perfectly well in tight corners.

The Bed: Opt for a smaller full bed with built-in storage in lieu of a dresser.

The Extras: If you lack a big closet, opt for a clothing rack. Place a small bench or stool next to it for any spillover or as a spot for your bag, so that nothing ends up on the floor.

Mirrors will also help the room appear bigger. Invest in a few that can you place strategically.

The Layout: A large rug (9"x12" or bigger) will help anchor the space. Opt for matching bedside tables and lamps that extend to the majority of the wall, and a dresser and chair on the opposite wall. This is a classic, foolproof bedroom layout that works like a charm every time.

The Bed: In a regular master bedroom that’s more or less square, there should be enough space for a queen- or king-size bed.

The Extras: If you have space, a long bench at the foot of the bed is not only aesthetically pleasing but also convenient.

Large Master Bedroom Layout

The Layout: In a room that’s long and narrow, it can be tempting to place the bed at the end, but try centering it on the long wall instead. Because the space is big, extra-large rugs can be hard to find, and they can get pricey quickly. Instead, layer your favorite rug on top of a less-expensive extra-large natural-weave rug. Instead of regular bedside tables, opt for larger dressers that will really fill up the space.

The Bed: Opt for a king or California king bed—you have the space for it, so enjoy!

The Extras: Large master suites often come with a walk-in closet, so forego the dresser in favor of more comfortable furniture. A reading corner, a desk, a bench, and a large plant can all help fill in awkward corners. Assess your needs, and plan your layout accordingly.
