The dog days of summer may still be raging on, but with every day that passes we inch closer and closer to the end of 2019 and the start of a whole new decade. And while every new year holds significance, there's something especially exciting about a fresh decade—2020 here we come.

So, while Color of the Year announcements are a constant in the world of home decor, the 2020 reveals feel a little extra special. Knowing that, Behr Paint decided to go big when announcing Back to Nature—a lovely yellow-tinged soft green—as their 2020 Color of the Year.

To showcase Back to Nature alongside the very environment that inspired its choice as Color of the Year, Behr and Home Depot invited a group of journalists, myself included, to Napa, California to experience the reveal in person. As we walked through a path lined with eucalyptus trees and agave plants, we all started sharing our predictions: yellow, green, burgundy (it is wine country, after all).

As it turns out, those who guessed yellow or green were pretty on point. Back to Nature is a green with hints of yellow, and was chosen because of its resemblance to colors found in nature. Erika Woelfel, vice president of color and creative services at Behr even describes it as "kind of like nature's neutral."

"This particular green is not too sharp, it's not too light, it's a perfect little sweet spot that I think resonates really well and translates really well into home," Woelfel tells MyDomaine. "It's a little bit warm, it's a little bit dusty, it's a great background, and it's a color you can layer with other greens like you see in nature."

Beyond its connection to nature, Woelfel also pointed out that Back to Nature isn't only nature's favorite neutral, it can act as such in your home too. Like your classic neutrals—think black, white, beige, navy—it can easily pair with other colors, but actually injects a little bit of personality too, all while appealing to a wide variety of people.

"It's a color that can appeal to men and women, it will also appeal to young and old," Sarah Fishburne, The Home Depot’s trend and design expert tells MyDomaine. "You can put it in a very modern setting or a very classic setting, and that's what makes it perfect."

And while it's impossible to predict what the new decade will have in store for us all, Back to Nature might be the inspiration we need to take a deep breath, step outside, and feel refreshed.
