After a year of field research in the design, architecture, art, fashion, and textile fields, Benjamin Moore has finally released its paint color of 2017: Shadow 2117-30. Described as a "rich, royal amethyst," the moody hue is a deep, purple-blue shade that recalls a rich, enigmatic sky at nightfall. "At dusk, reverently called 'Magic Hour' by photographers, bright light becomes languid and soft, gradually fading towards cashmere grey," reads the official description of Shadow. "Colors and silhouettes merge as day begins to dissolve into night."
Released alongside a 2017 color palette inspired by the way in which "shadow and light travel throughout a space during the course of a day," the color of 2017 stands out as a particularly full-bodied hue—one that communicates a specific ambiance, even in swatch form. "Allusive and enigmatic, Shadow is a master of ambiance. It is a color that calls to mind a ‘past,’ yet it can also make a contemporary, color-confident statement," said Ellen O’Neill, Benjamin Moore's creative director, of the color. "Shadow is sophisticated, provocative and poetic, it can bring energy to a space or harmony and a moment of respite."
