Unless you're lucky enough to live across the street from a beach, trips to the beach probably require more preparation than just slathering on some sunscreen and grabbing your beach towel. You'll need to make sure you have you bag packed with enough things to protect your skin from the sun's rays, keep you hydrated all day, and a keep you entertained.
We asked our editors to share what products they keep in their beach bag all summer long. Below, our picks for the best sunscreens, beverage containers, and accessories to bring with you, whether you'll be at the beach for a few hours or all day.
Brümate Hopsulator Trio
"Covertly sipping a craft beer on the beach is a time-honored, Jersey Shore tradition, but thankfully, those tacky foam koozies are a thing of the past. Brümate offers a plethora of can-cooling options in Instagram-friendly hues like rose gold as well as pretty floral patterns, designed to keep your beverage ice-cold and condensation free for hours.
The Trio is designed to fit both 12- and 16-ounce cans, though they also sell a "slim" option for you hard seltzer aficionados and a suite of wine-centric product offerings as well. My sister has been singing Brümate's praises for months and after our last family BBQ, where her beer stayed the perfect temp throughout dinner and mine became undrinkably warm, I became a convert." — Allison Bean, editorial director
Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen
"As someone who not only burns super easily in the sun, but is prone to acne too, finding a face sunscreen that actually feels good and won't break me out has been a years-long process. But this Supergoop option is officially my holy grail. I love that it goes on clear and doesn't leave a white cast, and the finish is so soft you can actually use it as a primer. Oh, and the fact that it's made with a reef-safe formula is a great bonus." — Bridget Mallon, associate editorial director
Sheldrake Sun by Oliver Peoples
"I have been wearing the same exact pair of sunglasses (three different pairs due to a few tragic losses) for over a decade now because I love them that much. The lenses are fantastic—they make the world around you more beautiful. And the look, which is inspired by Andy Warhol (buff green lenses plus acetate frame), is everything I could ever ask for from a pair of sunglasses. Check back in 50 years from now, and you'll find me wearing these as an octogenarian." — Mélanie Berliet, general manager
Glossier Invisible Shield
"I've had a hard time finding a daily sunscreen I enjoyed wearing until Invisible Shield came along. This formula is SPF 35, incredible lightweight, and as the name suggests, disappears completely into my skin. Plus the scent just smells like summer." — Caroline Utz, associate editor
Land's End Rash Guard
"I love the beach and sun, but I also like to stay protected. I finally purchased a rash guard this year that keeps me safe when the sun is strong and when I paddleboard. I thought this would not be the most flattering of clothing but it actually pairs nicely with my swimsuit and makes me look quite sporty!" — Dwyer Frame, senior editorial director, commerce
Movic Wireless Powerbank Charger
"Whether you're spending your time at the beach listening to podcasts, snapping photos for Instagram, or playing music on a Bluetooth speaker, you're going to need a fully charged phone. This portable charger can hold up to two full charges at once, so you don't need to panic if you forget to charge it after one day of use. I love that it comes with adapters for iPhone and Android phones and is compatible with phones that charge wirelessly, so there's no need to have extra cords tangling up in your beach bag." — Kate Geraghty, senior commerce editor
Babo Botanicals Cucumber and Aloe After Sun Treatment
"This is a great product to stash in your bag if you’re going to the beach or park. The natural formula is sheer, light, and cooling (thanks to the addition of witch hazel and eucalyptus oil). It’s safe to use on the face, and it goes on clear so it won’t leave any streaks. It does have a subtle scent, but I don’t find it to be overpowering and the smell fades once it’s absorbed. As an added bonus, this gel also works great on bug bites." — Katherine Louie, commerce editor
EltaMD Tinted Broad-Spectrum SPF 46
"I have exceptionally pale skin and something as simple as a five-minute walk to get coffee can have me burnt to a crisp. To avoid sunburns while I’m at the beach, I apply (and reapply) EltaMD’s UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46. The tinted formula goes on smooth and offers a tiny bit of coverage which is better than nothing!" — Chelsea Stuart, senior commerce editor
Book of the Month Club
"My favorite part of any beach day by far is spending a few hours completely wrapped up in a new book. I love the Book of the Month club all year, but I especially enjoy it in the summer to find new beach reads—my beach bag is never complete without one." — Karli Bendlin, email editor
Takeya Originals Insulated Water Bottle
"A large insulated water bottle is a must for me at the beach. I fill this one with ice cubes and top it off with water and the ice cubes last all day. Nothing worse than a head ache at the end of long day at the beach because you didn't get enough water! I'm just seeing now that they have a 40 oz option too. I might have to make that purchase because I usually bring multiple 32 oz bottles of water with me to the beach, but this one keeps ice in it the longest!" — Margot Cavin, photo producer, The Spruce
