Whether your pre-quarantine beauty routine took an hour or just ten minutes, chances are good you've been spending less time on your makeup every morning. Without going into the office or girls' nights out, there just isn't as much of a reason to get all dolled up. In fact, when we asked our editors for the beauty products they've been relying on lately, just one person responded with a makeup recommendation.
Instead, most of the MyDomaine editors—along with some editors from our sister site, The Spruce—have been taking advantage of these non-makeup months to transform their bare skin. From glow-inducing serums to the best, no-shine moisturizer for Zoom, here are the products that made the cut in our editors' social distancing-friendly beauty routines.
"Okay, it's not like I'm shaping my eyebrows daily during quarantine. Promise. But the thing is, on the days I feel inspired to 'get ready,' filling in my eyebrows feels like an important step of the process. I feel so put together and Zoom-ready with nicely groomed brows. This pencil is my alltime favorite eyebrow product. I love that the shades come in decimal points (1, 2, 2.5, 3, etc.), and that applying it really is a breeze. Oh! And I love the little comb that's on the other end of the pencil. I use the shade warm light brown."—Mélanie Berliet, general manager
"Sharing an office with Byrdie has some major perks, namely, access to the latest and greatest skincare and beauty products. I snagged this serum from one of their beauty giveaways, and I'm so glad I did. As a thirty-something with a bit of a babyface, I'm fortunate to be solidly in the 'prevention' stage of my fight against signs of aging and wrinkles, but even I can see this product packs a punch. The serum contains tetrapeptide, to tighten and firm skin, and hexapeptide, for brightening. I noticed a difference after just a few days of use—my skin is brighter and less dull-looking. The serum is so light and silky—it layers well under other products. While I'm loyal to few beauty products (there are so many serums to try!) I'll be buying this one again."—Allison Bean, editorial director
"I really wanted to take advantage of not leaving my home over the past few months by taking really good care of my skin. My makeup application has been very minimal, and it feels like a total treat when I actually have a reason to put makeup on. But my favorite treat of all lately has been this mask—I use it once a week and it clears my skin of any new blemishes (and evidence of old blemishes) almost immediately. It's a bright, berry color that looks a little scary at first and it tingles slightly, but this is one of those products that truly works. I don't think I'll ever live without it."—Kim Carvalho, associate social media editor
"I've been giving my skin a break from makeup in quarantine. The most you'll see me wear on Zoom is a brow gel. I have, however, been upping my skincare game. This soothing serum from SkinCeuticals is made from botanical extracts, helping reduce redness and calm sensitive skin. I truly notice a difference after I apply this in the morning—my skin hasn't been this calm since high school."—Caroline Utz, associate editor
"My big skin concern has always been redness, so I've been hesitant to ever try a derma roller. Now that I don't need to put in face time at the office I thought I would give one a try. I am one week into the regime and I can honestly say I am noticing a difference. My skin seems a little plumper and dare I say more youthful? I'm hoping it helps with my under eye circles, which have been a constant the last few months. Byrdie wrote about derma rolling for under eye bags so I am hoping I see the same results."—Dwyer Frame, senior editorial director, commerce
"I've always heard that retinol is the magical beauty ingredient that can banish adult acne, prevent wrinkles, and even out your skin tone. But, as with all magic, it comes with a price—an adjustment period where your skin may get worse before it gets better. Since social distancing has cancelled my plans for the foreseeable future, I've been using this mask from Glow Recipe religiously 3-4 times a week to help clear up my temperamental skin. While I know that the real benefits of retinol happen over long periods of time, I do feel like my skin is often softer and smoother mornings after I use it, and after a couple of months, the number of pimples that pop up during my breakouts does seem to be decreasing."—Kate Geraghty, senior commerce editor
"For the past couple of months I’ve had trouble sleeping, and the lack of sleep has definitely been showing on my skin. Luckily, the GinZing™ Refreshing Eye Cream from Origins is jam-packed with brightening ingredients that can help me 'fake' a full night of sleep. Stand out ingredients include coffee beans (a highly versatile component in a lot of creams), Asian ginseng, cucumber extract, and green tea extract which helps with swelling and puffiness. I’ve been using this eye cream every morning and I can already see results! P.S. For an enhanced experience, I’ve been putting my eye cream in the refrigerator so it’s extra cooling when I reach for it."—Katherine Louie, commerce editor
"I was really slow to the serum game but boy, Skin Inc.’s My Daily Dose of Glow is a game-changer. Since I use a number of topical treatments for melasma (pesky pigmentation made worse by the sun) my skin is often dry and dull, but since I started using this, my face looks and feels so much softer and brighter. The pre-blended serum hydrates, evens out skin tone, and reduces fine lines thanks to a combination of retinol-derived vitamin A, chlorella, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin E."—Chelsea Stuart, senior commerce editor
"The combination of having nowhere to go and a general unwillingness to do anything I can deem unnecessary has led to me paring down my already minimal skincare routine even more during quarantine. Basically, I apply Weleda Skin Food Light in the morning... and then nothing else. While I thought my skin might punish me for this laziness with dry patches or breakouts, it actually looks more even and hydrated than it has in a while."—Karli Bendlin, email editor
"Every moisturizer I've tried makes me look greasy on Zoom—except this one. I have oily, acne-prone skin, and in my dry apartment, I need products that add hydration without clogging my pores. The Snail Mucin in this cream isn't sticky or smelly, and its healing properties soothe any breakout that crops up. Quarantining at my boyfriend's place, I'm separated from my more expensive favorite products, but I'll be bringing this one back to my nightstand at home. Currently, I layer it over Differin and The Ordinary's Hyaluronic Acid for a high-efficiency, low-budget nighttime routine."—Kathryn Vandervalk, senior content and growth analyst
