From invoking seasonal vibes to making a home seem, well, homey, candles are the do-it-all essential of the home decor space. They can set the tone for your space—whether you're looking to add fresh and clean sets, musky and romantic, or sweet and cozy, the right candle can even change the mood.
We’ve made it our mission that you only light the best of the best, whether you’re looking to replenish your self-care stash or just want to add a little something special to your nightstand. (You and your home deserve it!) So we’ve curated a list of the best candle brands: These companies produce deliciously scented, prettily packaged options that you’ll want to burn down to the very last inch—and then immediately buy more.
Below, see our favorite candle brands that are lighting up our lives and homes.
Created by the popular beauty blogger Jackie Aina, Forvr Mood prides itself on being a luxury self-care brand that offers products you can actually afford. Their collection of candles are, indeed, high-end, housed in candy-colored jars and featuring 100 percent natural coconut soy wax.
We also love their cheeky names and themes, all inspired by relatable vibes and moods. (Take “Left on Read” for instance, which is described as the ideal candle for focusing on yourself and features a yummy coconut milk sorbet scent.) To get started, we recommend Forvr Mood’s Core Gift Set, which comes complete with the brand’s four signature scents: “Left on Read,” “Cuffing Season,” “Caked Up,” and “Matcha Business.”
This Parisian fragrance house is famous for their sexily scented, colorful candles that feel feminine and opulent. Available in either a monochromatic pink and purple—the wax perfectly matches the jar for a sleek look—or with a white candle in a shiny, holographic jar, these candles look great on your nightstand or in your bathroom.
Our favorites of the highly fragrant offerings include “Nudesse” (an intensely floral, dewy rose scent) and “Alkiria” (a sweetly scented candle with notes of ripe peaches and figs). As is the case with all of Overose’s candles, these scents provide you with up to 60 hours of burn time, thanks to a luxe formula of botanical wax and essential oils.
They say that scent can trigger memories (and by "they," we mean scientists in clinical research studies), and Homesick aims to bring those memories closer than ever by creating candles inspired by location and nostalgic events.
Crafted from a natural soy wax blend and boasting an 80-hour burn time, each famous fragrance is crafted to smell like a certain city, state, or other local. Their New Oreleans candle, for instance, features notes of blooming gardenia and sugary beignets. You can even pick candles that capture special moments like childhood birthday parties (think: notes of butter, cream, and vanilla).
With cult-favorite fragrances that expertly combine traditionally masculine and feminine notes, Boy Smells candles are the ones that your coolest friend is bound to have on their nightstand—and why shouldn’t you, too?
The core collection includes candles like “Kush” (a bright, cannabis-scented candle) and “Cameo” (a pretty-yet-complex scent boasting notes of crystallized ginger, tuberose, and musk), and are crafted with a blend of coconut and beeswax and housed in the brand's signature glossy black glass tumbler.
Otherland is another candle brand that’s also beloved by the trendsetting crowd for its transformative fragrances, pretty packaging, and affordable pricing. Gotta love that trifecta! Using only clean ingredients and a custom coconut and soy wax blend, the 8-ounce candles offer 55 hours of burn time.
Be sure to check out the gorgeously fresh “Canopy” candle, which features notes of California fig and ivy greens, and the heady “Rattan” candle with its lusty notes of golden amber and warm musk.
Harlem Candle Co.
Inspired by the rich, vibrant culture and history of Harlem and jazz, Harlem Candle Co. offers one-of-a-kind fragrances that are meant to transport you to another place and time. Similarly, as they’re housed in gorgeous, gilded glass tumblers, they look like they belong in a smoky, ritzy jazz club—although we’re sure any of them would look equally stunning sitting on your end table or nightstand!
Scents include “Josephine,” a blend of citrus, bergamot, and rose fragrance oils, and “Speakeasy,” a palo santo, bourbon, and tobacco elixir, and each of the candles are thoughtfully made with a soy-vegetable wax blend.
Diptyque candles are often thought of as the Rolls-Royce of the fragrance world, and all it takes is a single whiff to see (well, smell) why. Their floral-favored fragrances boast a strong throw even when left unlit, and have a timelessness to them with top notes like roses, jasmine, and amber.
While their standard candles weigh in at a little under 7-ounces and burn for up to 60 hours, the seriously scent obsessed should check out their giant indoor/outdoor candles which—at a HUGE 53 ounces—offer an incredible 150 hours of burn time.
If you’re looking for a candle that doesn’t only scent your home but injects it with some style, too, then you better browse the offerings from Laguna Candles. Unlike some candle companies that stick to one distinct packaging theme, Laguna candles come in a mix of offerings.
Hand-thrown ceramic pots, hand-blown glass containers, classic glass jars, and even a glass shell are all available, depending on your style. You can even get unscented versions of some of the candles if you're more interested in the flickering flame and beautiful holder than the scent itself.
Bring the outdoors in! Outdoor Fellow candles are inspired by the scents and smells of nature. With scent stories like “Coastal Forest” and “Winter Fir,” these candles are almost as refreshing as a walk through the woods or as mind clearing as a scenic hike.
They’re also hand-poured and made with a natural coconut wax blend, fragrance oils, and a cotton wick, and are even returnable at no additional cost if you happen to not love the scent you picked.
To really level-up your self-care game, splurge on a Byredo candle: Their stunning scents are nothing short of luxurious with unexpected notes, high-end fragrance oils, and an impressive 60 hours of burn time.
While you can’t go wrong with any of Byredo’s opulent options, we especially love “Loose Lips,” which smells like rose, Morello cherry, and violet, and “Bibliothèque,” which features notes of patchouli, leather, and plum, evoking the book-lined shelves of a library.
P.F. Candle Co.
This Los Angeles-based fragrance company is committed to producing high-quality, sustainable candles. Their entire collection is vegan, cruelty-free, and phthalate-free, as the candles are crafted from 100 percent soy wax that's made from USA-grown soy. Plus, they’re delightfully affordable.
Consider the “Golden Coast” candle, with notes of eucalyptus, sea salt, redwood, and palo santo encapsulated one of in the brand’s signature amber apothecary jars, and “Moonrise”—part of the Sunset collection, this candle is housed in a custom-printed tin and features the balmy smells of yuzu, Indian jasmine, and smoked cedarwood.
Le Labo is another cult-favorite candle brand, boasting unexpected fragrances that you won’t find in any old home goods or bath and body store. Le Labo’s “Santal 26” candle, for example, is smoky and leathery, while “Pin 12” showcases notes of pinewoods, amber, and musk.
All candles are hand-poured, made in the USA, and consist of a soy-wax blend, highly concentrated fragrance oils, and pure cotton wicks.
We love the wide variety of candles offered by Voluspa. Seriously—there is something for every nose! With scent stories that run the gamut from fruity to floral to warm to woody (and everything in between), Voluspa truly does it all. With a coconut wax blend and 100 percent natural wicks, all of their candles are phthalate, paraben, and sulfate-free.
In addition to their fabulous fragrances (be sure to smell the floral “Yashioka Gardenia” and the aquatic “Apple Blue Clover”), Voluspa’s colorful containers are also worthy of shout-out. After burning the candle, we recommend repurposing the rainbow-hued jar to hold flowers, jewelry, and other odds-and-ends.
In addition to monochromatic cozy clothing, this BIPOC-owned brand offers a luxurious line of handmade candles that are locally crafted in Los Angeles with a soy and coconut wax blend with a clean burn, thanks to the phthalate-free formulation.
In addition to fresh, spa-like fragrances, we also love Predominantly Black’s artistic glass containers and embossed metal tins. See: “A Madness Candle” and “A Subtle Candle,” both of which feature lovely line drawings on their glass jars, plus deliciously citrusy scents.
However you’d like to scent you home, you’ll be able to find the perfect perfume at NEST. Be it seasonal (come summer, the “Ocean Mist and Sea Salt” candle will be your go-to), spa-inspired (see the serene “Wild Mint & Eucalyptus” candle), or fresh and fruity (à la the “Velvet Pear” candle), NEST has it in stock.
Plus, all of the thoughtfully fragranced candles are carefully crafted with premium wax that burns cleanly and evenly, with their large three-wick candles toting a 75 to 100-hour burn time.
