Our Team Test-Drove the Best New Glasses Trends to Land in Store

Updated 05/06/19

Until recently, optical frames were merely worn to improve your vision; but 2018 has proven to be the year for stylish optics—they’re now embraced as an everyday accessory. Simply team a classic white linen dress with a pair of gold-rim wire frames and you’ll instantly make your outfit feel more put together.

For fashion’s tastemakers, a pair of glasses not only has the ability to transform an outfit but more importantly, they serve as an opportunity to further reflect your personal style. To showcase the current trending looks from OPSM, our Who What Wear team test drove their favourite frames to compliment their personal style; proving that a prescription isn’t the only reason to wear a pair of chic frames.

For outfit and optical inspiration, read on to see our teams’ favourite looks.

The leader of Who What Wear Australia describes her work style as a contrast to her weekend style. “When I’m in the office you’ll find me in wide leg cropped jeans or pants, with a tucked-in cami, t-shirt, or blouse. I elevate my outfit with accessories—heels, big earrings, or layered necklaces.”

When it comes to her choice of glasses, Bardas normally opts for smaller-shaped optics but on this occasion, the Dolce & Gabbana frames were something different and refreshing. “I love that they work as more of an accessory to my outfit.”

One of our beauty experts Algar, describes her personal style as very casual, which translates into her office style. “I wear a lot of jeans, sneakers and t-shirts; but I love to add a good blazer or an interesting pair of earrings to dress it up.”

Algar (who has never actually needed glasses) effortlessly introduces and pulls off the classic Ray-Ban frame. “I loved the shape and they felt quite cool, and a little more casual. I think because I don’t often wear glasses, it was fun to give it a go.”

Fashion editor McGregor, knows exactly how to bring some sophistication to any outfit. “A pair of frames can immediately elevate an outfit. They are also a really great accessory for the office as they have a more understated feel than say a pair of statement earrings, for example.”

McGregor describes her personal style as effortless, refined and a bit boyish at times. With fair skin, she carefully considers colours that compliment her tone and opts for styles that frame her face shape. “I’ve always preferred wider frames and am drawn to tortoise shell or neutral tones—I often find that black or bright-coloured frames are too harsh against my skin tone and hair.”

Youl is no-stranger to wearing glasses; without them she jokes “the world would look a bit fuzzy and I’d probably end up getting on the wrong bus.”

Youl is always on-the-go and keeps her style versatile; describing it as refined and androgynous. “I like to keep my wardrobe paired back and aim to wear my favourite pieces regularly—just in different combinations.”

Keeping a multipurpose wardrobe means finding a pair of frames that will work best with a multitude of pieces. “Frames are a really simple way to instantly elevate an outfit. They are also a great way to express your personal style in a more traditional office environment where you may be limited by your clothing and other accessories.”
