What to Look for in a Sectional
As with any piece of furniture, you’ll want to consider the size of a sectional when selecting the right one for your home. Measure to ensure its dimensions will fit comfortably in the room, and check that it will fit through doorways and up stairwells, too (double check if it comes fully assembled or if you'll have to put pieces together). You’ll also want to think about how many people it can seat, especially if you’re planning to play host.
Sectionals come in a variety of shapes, with the most popular being an L-shape. L-shaped sectionals come in both right- and left-hand orientation, which refers to the side where the chaise is located. However, some furniture is reversible, allowing you to switch the orientation to suit your needs. Other common sectional shapes include a U-shape, pit, and even curved options.
If you plan to have a central, floating sectional, Nashville-based interior designer Jessica Stambaugh recommends choosing a piece with some interest to it, “like a bold color or sophisticated shape.” She adds that “if it’s a floor plan where it is the central focal point, the shape should be considered more carefully and it should be more refined, compared to when you situate it in a corner. The corner hides the shape and you can get away with something more basic and still feel sophisticated.” Stambaugh also loves to use sectionals in corners or fitted into nooks. “This creates a custom, higher-end feel, and a sense of coziness,” she says.
There are a number of features you may want to look for in a sectional, any of which will increase its versatility. Some sectionals have reclining seats or pull-out mattresses, while others offer useful features such as built-in USB chargers or hidden storage compartments. Whether or not the chaise is fixed or reversible is another sign of versatility, as is the color and fabric.
