Silk pillowcases are pretty much the stuff of dreams. Because of their luxurious appearance, silk bedding can instantly transform a regular old bedroom into a bonafide boudoir that even Blanche Devereaux would approve of. But in addition to that eye-candy aesthetic, sleeping on silk is a sweet treat for the hair and skin.
Thanks to that silky smooth surface, you're less likely to wake up with the lines that crease your face when you sleep on a cotton pillowcase. As for those lovely locks of yours, silk pillowcases are known for reducing breakage and frizz, as well as preserving style and locking in moisture. What more could you ask for?
Here, the best silk pillowcases.
Best Overall: Brooklinen Mulberry Silk Pillowcase
As far as silks go, mulberry is basically the Rolls Royce. Produced through mulberry-leaf-fed silkworms, it’s considered to be one of the highest quality of silks with naturally longer, smoother, and more durable fibers.
Brooklinen utilizes that luxe natural fabric in its dreamy silk pillowcase. Made from 100 percent pure mulberry silk, it’s naturally cool to the touch and incredibly smooth—thus, reducing friction damage in hair and on skin. Available in both standard and King sizes, there are six stunning shades to choose from, all complete with an envelope closure.
Best Gift Set: Slip Beauty Sleep Collection Gift Set
Slip is practically synonymous with silk pillowcases and sleep accessories. In fact, you probably already know someone who has (and raves) about their pillowcases and hair scrunchies. And guess what? They’re worth all the hype!
Slip uses a trademarked silk fabric that features extra-long mulberry silk fibers with a 22 momme thickness (AKA, their products have a good midweight feel). With a brand this iconic, it’s worth splurging on not just that luxurious pillowcase, but a comfy sleep mask, too. Silk's gift set includes both, making it a great present for someone special—or the perfect self-care treat for yourself. (You deserve it!)
Best Splurge: Blissy Tie-Dye Pillowcase
With a 22 momme weight and 100 percent pure mulberry silk construction, Blissy’s silk pillowcases are high quality enough to live up to countless nights of snoozing (with very little tossing and turning). They’re meticulously handmade, naturally hypoallergenic, and have a smooth surface that's both cool and refreshing.
The best part? Blissy pillowcases are actually machine-washable, making them as easy to care for as it is to fall asleep on them. And while there are tons of lovely solid colors available (14, to be exact), we're particularly smitten with this whimsical tie-dye pattern. It’s unique and so very 2021.
Best Budget: Ravmix 100% Pure Mulberry Silk Pillowcase King Size 21 Momme
Looking for something budget-friendly? As per usual, Amazon is here to help. This pillowcase is just as soft and smooth as more expensive options, with a 21 momme weight you (and your skin) will love. With over 11,000 five-star reviews, it’s earned the love of sleepers everywhere, which is no surprise considering the under-$35 price tag. Affordable silk bedding? It’s not a dream—although you’ll be having plenty of them sleeping on this super-soft pillowcase.
Best All-Natural: Night Clean Silk Pillowcase
Thanks to this Night silk pillowcase, you’ll be able to sleep soundly knowing that what you’re resting on is free from harmful chemicals and unnecessary dyes. Made from 100 percent all-natural and untreated silk fibers containing 18 amino acids, Night proudly claims that their silk is “the closest to mother nature” you can get.
With that dedication to clean production, the result is a pillowcase that’s hypoallergenic, resistant to growth of bacteria, and gentle against skin and hair. Available in both standard and King sizes (although the standard is currently sold out), it’s also machine-washable.
Best Fair Trade-Certified: The Ethical Silk Company Pillowcase
Don’t let an unethical purchase keep you up at night. The Ethical Silk Company’s products are handmade in a Fair Trade-certified facility in Jaipur, India, using sustainable practices and with a dedication to ethical labor standards.
The care taken shows in their must-have silk pillowcase that features mulberry silk with a lighter momme weight of 19 and a natural creamy color (no bleaches or chemical dyes here!). Their silk pillowcases are also unique in the fact that they’re produced with a satin weave that results in a lovely matte luster instead of the super shiny appearance you tend to expect with silk.
Best Personalized: Shhh Silk 2 Mixed Silk Pillowcases
Shhh Silk lets you personalize your beauty rest with the option to monogram their silk pillowcases with your name or initials. They're crafted from 100 percent pure, long-fiber mulberry silk with 22 momme weight, and are available in both zippered and envelope closures, as well as in sets of two.
As far as pillowcase bundles, you’re usually stuck with two of the same. But with this set from Shhh, you’re able to snag both a black and white silky pillowcase for a mix-and-match look for less than what you’d be paying separately. Shhh also offers a 100-night sleep trial so good nights are pretty much guaranteed.
Best for Beauty Sleep: Go-To Face Case
At skincare company Go-To, silk pillowcases are considered a beauty essential—as they should be! Go-To’s silk pillowcase is made from 100 percent mulberry silk with a 22 momme, helping to eliminate crease lines, friction, and frizz. Plus, it won’t absorb (ahem, steal) much-needed moisture from your skin and hair. We may also be a little obsessed with the cheeky “Hi, Cute Face” embroidery on the white silk.
Best Bundle: Mommesilk Beauty Sleep Pillowcase Bundle
If you want to outfit your entire bed with silk-covered pillows (and perhaps a guest room, too), we don’t blame you! Simply look to this silk pillowcase bundle, courtesy of Mommesilk. The set is complete with four gorgeous pillowcases, all of which feature 100 percent mulberry silk with an impressive 22 momme and 600 thread count. Mommesilk adheres to OEKO-TEX standards, and their pillowcases are machine-washable and available in five oh-so-pretty colors, including a rosy pink and silvery blue hue.
Overall, we like Brooklinen's Mulberry Silk Pillowcase (view at Brooklinen) the best since it's made with high-quality silk, available in a wide range of fun colors, and is budget-friendly. For an eco-friendly and Fair Trade-certified option, look no further than The Ethical Silk Company's Silk Pillowcase (view at The Ethical Silk Company), which is made from 100 percent mulberry silk sourced with the highest standards of sustainability.
What to Look for in a Silk Pillowcase
There are lots of different types of silk, but mulberry silk is widely considered the top choice for bedding. It's made from the cocoons of a specific type of moth that's fed only mulberry leaves throughout its life, hence the name. The resulting fabric is exceptionally smooth, cool to the touch, and durable. Pillowcases made from 100 percent mulberry silk can be pricey, but it's worth paying a premium for a pillowcase that will last.
Momme is the unit of measurement used to determine a silk's weight and, subsequently, its quality. For pillowcases, a momme weight of 22 is pretty much the highest quality you can find. Pillowcases made from silk with a momme weight in the 15-19 range will still be exceptionally smooth, but not quite as durable. That said, they're generally a more affordable option and could be a good choice for an "entry-level" silk pillowcase.
Silk is exceptional at reducing friction, which is one of the reasons why silk pillowcases are so great for your hair and skin. But, this also means they can slip off pillows much more easily than a cotton or linen pillowcase. The best silk pillowcases have an envelope closure rather than just an open end, which goes a long way in keeping them in place overnight. Zippered closures are also great, but if the zipper ever snags or breaks you'll have to repair it or invest in a brand new pillowcase.
