These Are the Paint Colors a Southern Designer Swears by for Fall

Southern homes have a certain charm: The big wraparound porches with perfectly manicured topiaries and traditional shutters, the vast entryways with tall greenery and colorful art, the perfectly curated mix of old and new furniture. Southerners tend to put a ton of effort into their homes, making them feel inviting, welcoming, and warm, just like their owners. Since paint is the least expensive way to make an impactful change in your décor, we turned to designer Rachel Cannon to share her favorite paint colors for fall. Are you looking to start with a clean base, repaint your front door, or freshen up your kitchen cabinets? This Southern interior designer has the perfect color for you.

If your comfort zone is white, it can still work for fall—just make sure you choose a warm shade. "This is a bright, warm white. I love it because it works well as a base for neutrals or clear, saturated colors," says Cannon.

A fall upgrade doesn't have to mean a total interior makeover. You can give your exterior a little facelift by changing your shutters or door color. "This is my favorite color for shutters and front doors," Cannon says. "Is it navy? Is it gray? Is it black? Is it brown? The answer is yes to all, and it's gorgeous."

Here is a shade that'll work all year long."This is the loveliest aqua blue with a hint of richness to it. We've used it in kids' rooms and kitchens, and it works beautifully in both," Cannon says. The richer tone is fitting for autumn, but blue still remains a quintessential summer color.

If your tween has been begging you to redecorate their room, consider now the perfect time. "This is a favorite for tween rooms," Cannon says. "The gray tone helps give it some longevity, so they don't feel like they're getting a baby blue room."

You don't have to paint your walls to make your home feel fresh. For a smaller-scale project, opt to touch-up trim, or even paint a piece of furniture to breathe new life into it. "I love this blue for millwork, custom cabinetry, and even refinishing furniture," Cannon says.

Try using this color in a glossy finish, so it can catch the light.

The name alone might convince you to pick up a paintbrush. "Lavender is one of my favorite colors, and this is a great color to use when you want just a hint of lavender," Cannon says.
