When outfitting your bedroom, a wardrobe may not be the first piece of furniture you think to buy. But if you're low on closet space, a spacious design with clothing rods, shelves, and drawers can certainly go a long way.
“Oftentimes, our closets are just not large enough,” says Andi Morse, founder and principal designer at Morse Design. “Having a wardrobe provides additional shelving and/or hanging space to store those extra pieces.”
When picking out a wardrobe, you’ll want to weigh your personal storage needs against the needs of your space. You'll also want to take note of any required assembly, as well as the style of the piece—your wardrobe should add to your décor scheme, not detract from it.
Here, the best wardrobes.

What to Look for in a Wardrobe
When choosing a wardrobe, consider how much storage space you need, and balance that against how much square footage you have to spare. From there, think about the types of items you need to store and what kind of storage they'll need. Some items, like dresses and coats, might be too long to hang in shorter wardrobes.
Wardrobes can contain shelves, drawers, clothing rods, and sometimes even hooks. When you're comparing different options, think about what you need to store and how you’d like to store it—if you mainly want to store items like t-shirts or undergarments, a design with a lot of drawers is your best bet. Depending on which wardrobe you pick, you may even be able to customize your storage layout to make it just what you need.
Wardrobes are typically used in a bedroom, so you'll want to make sure you choose one that reflects your personal style as well as matches any other furniture you already have. While you shop, consider materials, colors, and hardware finishes, as well as any customizable options out there.
Some wardrobes ship fully assembled, but many do not. Before you purchase, confirm how much assembly is required, as well as any safety hazards to be aware of—larger, heavier picks may need to be mounted to your wall to avoid tipping over.
What's the difference between a wardrobe and an armoire?
Wardrobes and armoires are similar, but not quite the same. “Typically, a wardrobe is larger and deeper than an armoire,” Morse says. And wardrobes tend to boast different storage options than armoires, too.
While armoires are typically packed with smaller places to store stuff, wardrobes usually boast a couple larger storage options—and they almost always come with a clothing rod.
“An armoire tends to be more ornate and compartmentalized than a wardrobe,” says Caron Woolsey, founder and principal designer at CW Interiors.“If you need storage for a variety of different item types, then look to an armoire. If your primary concern is space for hanging items and just a few non-hanging things, look to a wardrobe.”
How should you organize your wardrobe?
The first step to organizing your wardrobe is simple: Figure out what you’re trying to store. “Think through what exactly you want to store in your wardrobe and how you want to store it,” says Meg Markland, a professional organizer at NEAT by Meg. “Do you prefer to hang or fold your denim?” she says. “If hanging, make sure to plan extra hanging space. If folding, make sure to incorporate extra drawers.”
By starting with your storage needs—and factoring in your personal preferences—you’re more likely to end up with a system that works for you. “If you plan it out based on your current needs, it will make organizing the wardrobe much easier,” says Markland.
What are some tips for maximizing your wardrobe space?
Want to make the most of the storage space in your wardrobe? In addition to stocking up on space-saving hangers, Markland suggests you file-fold the clothes in your drawers. “It maximizes your drawer space and helps you see your clothing much easier,” she says.
She also recommends you organize your clothes by season. “Have one lower spot and one higher spot for seasonal clothes,” Markland says. To get started, Markland recommends you put spring/summer clothes in one bin and fall/winter clothes in another. When the seasons change, make sure the in-season bin is lower and easier to access. Then, relegate the out-of-season bin to a higher-up shelf, where it may be tucked away and harder to reach.
Why Trust MyDomaine?
When selecting wardrobes for this story, MyDomaine writer Lindsey Lanquist considered a few key features. To increase the likelihood that you’d find a wardrobe that works for you, she sought to include a range of wardrobes of different sizes and styles. She also favored flexibility wherever she found it. Wardrobes earned bonus points if they were available in multiple colors or finishes, or if they came with customizable storage solutions. And because wardrobes can get expensive, she kept value at top of mind—prioritizing wardrobes that seemed high-quality, given their price point.
