In Blake Lively's brand-new thriller, The Shallows, a leisurely surf session lands Lively's character Nancy in shallow waters with a great white shark. To prepare for the role mere months after giving birth to baby James, the actress and soon-to-be mother-of-two reportedly hit the gym five or six days a week with the help of her trainer, Don Saladino.
The NYC-based trainer recently revealed the details of Lively's pre-Shallows workout plan in an interview with Well + Good, and it's as strenuous as you'd expect. Lively begins her week with an upper-body workout on Monday, moves into the lower body on Tuesday, does a pool workout on Wednesday, works out in the great outdoors on Thursday, and finishes with an "active recovery day" on Friday. The actress usually either walks around the block, goes on a quick jog, or hikes on these "active recovery" days.
When asked about the most important aspect of her workouts, Saladino gave a one-word response: intensity. "I could write out a workout for you, but the thing that people have to take into consideration is the intensity levels," he told Well + Good. "And just because you see a celebrity workout plan doesn’t mean that it’s exactly the same formula that helped them get in shape. If a leg day was set up for a Monday for Blake, but she was flying home the night before and stayed up all night with the baby and was exhausted, I’m not gonna make her do the full workout."
