When it comes to effortless entertaining, Camille Styles sets the standard. Whether the popular lifestyle blogger is hosting a tropics-inspired baby shower or a festive Friendsgiving gathering, she has a skill for making daunting entertaining endeavors look easy, so it should come as no surprise that her daughter's unicorn-themed birthday party was no exception.
Although the inspired bash appeared expertly curated and expensive, we were surprised when Styles revealed that everything is, in fact, from Target. "As soon as my daughter Phoebe and I saw the new Pillowfort collection, the whimsical pieces inspired us and were the perfect launching pad for her birthday party and a bedroom refresh," Styles told MyDomaine. Everything from the throw pillows and the duvet covers to the canopy tents and the bean bag chairs is from the affordable retailer—and 100% shoppable.
Ahead, the entertaining pro shares her tried-and-true tips for throwing a kid's birthday party on a budget, including all the playful Target Pillowfort products to add to your cart now.
"I almost always stick to one simple theme when planning a celebration for kids," says Styles. "It helps keep everything really focused and makes choosing décor, food, and favors a breeze."
When it comes to party planning, Styles favors simplicity. "I'm a big believer in the less-is-more approach and concentrate my efforts on just a couple of wow factors, like the unicorn cupcakes we had at Phoebe's party," says Styles.
Styles continued the whimsical theme through the décor, opting for store-bought items over handcrafted ones. "Since kids' parties lend themselves to a great theme, find a pre-designed collection of party décor and let that inspire every other part of the party," she suggests. "In other words, don't try to DIY everything yourself—kids' parties are meant to be fun for moms and dads, too!"
Given the theme of the party, Styles decked out her daughter's bedroom in cozy essentials that exuded whimsical vibes. "I just can't get enough of all the unicorn motifs: the printed sheets (that I kind of want for my own bed), the cozy plush pal, and (OMG) the Unicorn Head Wall Decor—I wish Target had carried décor like this when I was six," gushes Styles.
A daybed offered the perfect space for a friendly pillow fight and lent an overall balance of fun and functionality to the bedroom. This daybed is "so well made and looks super high-end," she adds. "Honestly, people can't believe it when they find out how affordable it is."
"A trundle bed is a perfect solution for a smaller space," recommends Styles. "You can roll it out when it's time for a sleepover, but it doesn't take up more space than a twin bed every other day."
"Our unicorn theme made choosing the other elements easy, and then just a couple of special pieces like this bean bag chair were the visual icing on the cake," says Styles.
Of all the items, there was a clear favorite among the kids that's still getting a lot of love: the A-frame tent. "My kids are obsessed with this," says Styles. "I love it too because it creates an instant hideout for imaginative play, but can be tucked into a corner or collapsed for storage when they're not using it."
"For young kids, I like to have a loose schedule of activities so they have time to do everything we've planned, but it also helps the 'party tornado' stay concentrated in a few designated areas," offers Syles. "Craft tables, obstacle courses, relay races, board games, spa stations, ice cream sundae bars, and living room dance parties are always great go-to activities."
