It's official: Cardi B is one of the biggest breakout stars of 2018. The rapper took home the coveted award for Best New Artist at the MTV Video Music Awards and used her platform to speak out on behalf of working moms everywhere.
Cardi B, whose real name is Belcalis Almanzar, gave birth to her first child in July, a baby girl called Kulture Kiari Cephus. At the annual awards, she was vocal about what it was like to get pregnant and give birth while trying to focus on her career, and the negativity showed toward working moms. "A couple of months ago, a lot of people were saying, 'You know, you're gambling your career. You're about to have a baby. What are you doing?' And you know, I had a baby, I carried the baby, and now I'm still winning awards!" she said at the VMAs.
She also pulled a prank on the audience, walking onto the stage with what appeared to be a baby in a blanket, only to reveal an award.
A few weeks prior to giving birth to her daughter, Cardi B pulled out of a world tour with Bruno Mars. The tour was no-doubt important for her career, especially following the success of their joint single, "Finesse," but the star was honest that she wasn't ready to travel. She told reporters it was "the hardest decision to make" but ultimately the right one for her and her newborn baby. "I underestimated the whole mommy thing," she wrote in social media in July. "Not only am I just not ready physically, I'm not ready to leave my baby behind since the doctors explained it's not healthy for her to be on the road." No doubt after winning the award for Best New Artist, Cardi B has proved those who doubted her wrong.
