Designing a nursery is unlike designing any other room in the house. For one, you're usually pregnant, so you haven't even met the person you're designing it for; and secondly, you have to think like a child and draw on your imagination to think up dreamy spaces that will make your baby smile. The tricky part is in the balance: making sure it's equal parts playful and practical, but above all, comfortable, because you'll be spending a lot of time in here, too. We're always looking to celebrity nurseries for inspiration, because they always have their finger on the pulse of what makes for stylish and fun baby sanctuaries. Scroll down for some of our favourites.
Jamie-Lynn Sigler wanted to design a nursery that would make her son Beau smile. The actress (Guys With Kids, Entourage, and The Sopranos) went for a fairly neutral color palette and unfussy shapes, making sure it had "clean lines and nothing over the top." The low-rise white crib and a white leather rocker with sleek walnut legs fit this minimalist aesthetic. "I wanted everything to be very simple, and the embellishment in the accessories," she says.
When supermodel Coco Rocha designed her daughter Ioni's nursery, she enlisted the creative team at One Kings Lane. Interior designer Alex Reid created a functional yet über-chic room with a stunning pop-art gallery wall, modern collector’s pieces, and striking black-and-white contrasts that mimic the New York City cottage she shares with husband, artist James Conran.
The Chew host Daphne Oz and her husband, John Jovanovic, created a gender-neutral room for their daughter, Philomena Bijou. The couple didn't know if they were having a boy or a girl, so they opted for a touch of rough and a hint of luxe. "I wanted it to be unique, not just all white or all cream," she told People. Oz teamed up with Bellini to design a classic and sophisticated space.
Jaime King blew us away with her insanely sophisticated nursery space, but then again, we wouldn't expect anything less from the stylish model—did you see her stunning closet makeover? The chic mom of two, along with her husband, Kyle Newman, teamed up with parenting retailer Cricket’s Circle and RH Baby & Child to turn the space into a nursery/office and family hangout. “I didn’t want a space overrun by kids—I wanted to maintain my identity and sense of calmness, which for us is a clean, zen environment to live in and raise our children," she tells Cricket Circle.
As the CEO of Honest, an ethical, nontoxic household product company, Jessica Alba is a fan of midcentury pieces with history. "I find that things that are mass-produced these days don't have the touch that older things have—I also like the story behind something, the fact that it's had a life," she tells MyDomaine Australia. Haven's nursery is filled with antique finds, such as the dresser Alba picked up at a Pasadena flea market. Alba gave it a slick coat of turquoise paint and some pulls from Anthropologie to give it a modern, playful touch.
This sweet hideaway was created by Los Angeles-based Shabby Chic designer Rachel Ashwell for Jessica Simpson's son, Ace. Ashwell fused high-end pieces with flea market finds for a space that's "traditional, but a little bit country." To bring some personality to the space, the designer upholstered a chair in denim patchwork and applied chic leather panels to the Restoration Hardware Emelia Crib. "It was cool to see it all come together," said Simpson. "So creative!"
Former Bachelorette Ashley Herbert Rosenbaum and husband, J.P., incorporated a unique travel theme for their baby boy, Fordham. Designer Vanessa Antonelli, of NessaLee Baby, said the couple wanted a neutral-colored space with minimal pattern and design styles. The star of the show is that stunning driftwood accent wall's handmade wire letters that spell out their son's name. "There are so many talented artisans in this world, and it makes the room that much more special," she said.
Kourtney worked closely with designer Jeff Andrews on her Calabasas home to create "a chic yet comfortable retreat" that was also kid friendly. This sophisticated style is evident in her daughter Penelope's nursery. We just love how that statement turquise chandelier breaks up the pink theme.
For Molly Sims, making sure her son had a "safe, calming place to sleep at night" was priority when designing his nursery. Sims did that just when she welcomed newborn, Brooks Alan, into the world with this serene space. The model turned to interior designer Kishani Perera and Layla Grayce owners Wendy Rossiter Estes and Tiffany Grayce Harris to create the tranquil, soft-blue room with adorable kid-friendly decorations.
When one of our favourite designers, Nate Berkus, transformed his home to include a sweet nursery for his daughter Poppy, we knew it would be something pretty special. This glam space has all the elegance you'd expect from the Oprah Winfrey home-design guru. The nursery is clad in beautiful marble wallpaper lined with a gilded gold mirror and picture frames. “Great design is like great love: You trust your gut," Nate tells Architectural Digest.
Somewhere in between filming her sixth season of Glee, actress and author Naya Rivera created a serene and gender neutral space for her newborn. The space isn't packed with overly kidlike pieces and bold patterns, except for that statement teepee that inspired Rivera, who says she she "sort of built the room around that." Rivera worked closely with designer Angelo Surmelis to create an exciting, neutral nursery that doesn't skimp on the drama or impact.
When designing Skyler's nursery, Rachel Zoe was on a mission to create a "beautiful, not kitschy" space. This chic room is certainly both those things, with a Jeff Koons print Monkey Train, state-of-the-art rocking chair and contemporary crib fit for a celebrity baby.
DwellStudio founder and home design expert Christiane Lemieux worked closely with actress Tiffani Thiessen to create this elegant “cosmic chic” nursery for her baby boy Holt. Using husband Brad Smith’s Star Wars Darth Vader phone as inspiration, Thiessen continued the space theme with astral wallpaper, galaxy bedding, and dark sky paint.
