This Chicago dwelling hits the style jackpot thanks to the approachable, cozy design scheme complete with a healthy dose of modern luxury. Needless to say, it's the urban home tour of our dreams. Even more impressive? The folks who live in this picture-perfect home, Doug and Shanely, are first-time homeowners. And while any decorating project is a lofty task when you've never done it before, this one was particularly labor-intensive because the entire space had been gutted out.
But the couple embraced the freedom of a blank slate and turned a potentially overwhelming task into an exciting project, thanks to some professional guidance. With a little help from Homepolish designer Claire Staszak, they were able to create a chic and timeless abode while still upholding their own creative vision. Expert approval: check! Wallpaper plays a huge role in the overall look of a space. It can either be cutting-edge and tasteful or outdated and creepy… This example clearly falls within the former group. If you want to experiment with wallpaper in your home as a way to spice up blank spaces, a hallway or foyer is a great place to do so (especially if you aren't a maximalist).
The Dining Room
We're not sure what to call out first; the balanced color palette, the flood of natural light, or the perfect scale. Together, these design choices create a refined dining room that's just refined enough without being stuffy. We particularly love the bench with metal accents. Not only does it provide extra seating, but it also introduces an element of laid-back coolness. Paired with the sophisticated blue dining chairs, formal hardwood floors, and rustic farmhouse lighting, we'd say it's a backdrop fit for a king.
Since the bedroom is the most personal space in a home, it's important to make sure you let your character inform the décor there. For example, the rest of the home features more neutral color palettes, but in the bedroom, they include a playful pop of hot pink. And if you're going to use bright colors but don't want to prematurely commit, do it with a throw you can easily swap out.
Okay, we're obsessed with this kitchen. Even though it maintains that city-sleek veneer with matte pendant lights and handsome cognac bar stools, the high ceilings, open plan, and fresh cabinets give it a farmhouse feel. Who needs a weekend escape when you've got the best of both worlds in one space?
The Living Room
The mirrored nesting tables, hardwood floors, and large-scale metallic paintings establish an overall dignified style in the living room. To maintain that cozy, approachable atmosphere, the couple introduced a printed carpet and brown leather sling chairs, which pack in that dimension of warmth.
The Family Room
A soft suede sofa with colorful throw pillows, a sturdy coffee table with plenty of surface space and plenty of bright light… That's how you style a foolproof family room. To create a more casual setting than the living room, they brought in some bohemian accents and plush pieces. We predict many movie marathons and social gatherings in this room down the road.
