This Instagram Account Will Make You Crave Vegetarian Food
One of the greatest side effects of Instagram’s rise in popularity is the way amateur chefs, food photographers, and food lovers have used the platform to share their culinary adventures with the rest of us. One account you should really follow is Chocolates for Basil, a visual ode to health-conscious fare that doubles as a love story between Jerrelle Guy and Eric Harrison.
Guy, an omnivore, and Harrison, a vegetarian, combine their love of plant-based food in this aesthetically pleasing account that was recently profiled by Vogue. According to Guy, the IG account began as a blog, but when she noticed her photos being published on Instagram, she “fell quickly into that visual culture.”
As for where she got the name, Guy, who is African-American, admits that it has to do with her race, “specifically on being black, coupled with our conscious decision to embrace a greener way of eating,” she says. Her mission, she explains, is to “help people who are trying to make moves from a meat-centered diet to a vegetarian lifestyle by sharing flavorful alternatives to the comfort foods we all love, and offer a more pleasurable eating experience overall.”
Some of those alternatives include beet pastrami on homemade rye bread, vegan pumpkin pancakes, and avocado toast pizza with mashed tater tots. “A lot of people I know think that healthy food won’t make you salivate,” Guy adds. I hope I’ve already proven those people wrong!
