The First Thing a Nutritionist Would Cut From Your Diet (It's Not Carbs)

If you're trying to get in better shape this summer (like many of us), you may already be making a number of healthier changes to your diet and workout routine. But are you considering the drinks you're putting into your body? According to nutritionist Cara Anselmo, cutting sugary drinks with unnecessary calories is the first place to start.

Anselmo is a nutritionist and dietitian at New York's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center who spoke with Business Insider, saying she advises her clients who are trying to lead a healthier lifestyle to stop drinking unhealthy beverages with calories.

"If you drink 500 calories of liquid versus eating 500 calories of food you're going to feel much less satiated, which is one of the reasons soda and sweetened drinks are such horrible things. You don't get a sense of fullness," Anselmo shared.

Not only are liquid calories from juice and sugary soda essentially wasted since they don't fill us up, but they can also trigger more eating. "When drinking fluid calories, people often end up eating more calories overall," Richard Mattes, a professor of nutrition at Purdue University told Live Science.

An eight-year study of the topic showed that "higher consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with a greater magnitude of weight gain and an increased risk for development of type 2 diabetes in women." So while you may think to limit carbs or desserts or eat reasonable portion sizes, you may want to focus on your liquid calories; at best, in conjunction with whatever other efforts you're making; and at easiest, you could try this strategy out and see how it works for you.
