When we consider the habits that could be harming our thyroid and disrupting our healthy balance of hormones, we typically think about diet. Though certain foods have been proven to help and hurt our thyroid health, it's not just things we're ingesting that are affecting our bodies. For Fern Olivia Langham, thyroid expert and founder of Thyroid.Yoga who herself recovered from hypothyroidism, there are certain common household products she refuses to use because they've been proven detrimental to her hormones. In Mindbodygreen, she listed the items you'll never find in her home. We've highlighted her top ones below.
Chemical-laden beauty products: Too many products on the market contain tons of chemicals—some that have been shown to be associated with cancer, asthma, skin irritations, and messing with our hormones. With daily use, these chemicals take up residence in our bodies. "Streamline your personal care routine so you use fewer products and start to work on your beauty [regimen] from the inside out," Langham advises. Educate yourself on harmful ingredients, and make sure the products you're purchasing and using are green, clean, organic, and natural cosmetics, and free of these toxic materials.
Things that foam: Household and self-care products that foam—think shampoos, conditioners, body wash, hand soap, and even toothpaste—usually contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). But SLS strips the skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry, irritated, and vulnerable. "Instead of using harsh foaming products to clean the skin, apply a few drops of germ-busting essential oils such as tea tree, oregano, thyme, or my favorite, lavender," Langham suggests. "You'd be surprised by just how many essential oils have antibacterial and antiviral properties."
Synthetic musk: If you're using products that are perfumed, it's likely that you're exposing yourself to synthetic musk. "Fascinating but worrying, research shoes that polycyclic musk, the most common synthetic, acts as a toxin enhancer by debilitating the cell's natural ability to defend against other toxic substances." Langham recommends always choosing unscented and fragrance-free products, unless you know the companies you're buying from are using pure essential oils.
