>After deciding to convert part of her Manhattan Beach living room into an office, makeup guru and YouTube star Desi Perkins enlisted designer Deanna Mackensen of online interior design platform Laurel & Wolf to help create a space that reflected her and her husband’s tastes and needs. Working from home, Perkins had found herself struggling to shut down work mode. “I think I can speak for a lot of YouTubers, or anyone who creates social media content and works for themselves, that we can get a little crazy because we are always working from home,” she says. “It’s hard to differentiate the space where you want to come home and watch a movie with your husband and the space where you want to work.” Perkins decided that her spare sitting room could make the perfect workspace. “I just felt that I could use it as a dedicated workspace in order to help separate my work life from my home life,” she explains.
>Aesthetically, she wanted something “that was really chic, not too busy—somewhere where I felt relaxed and calm because I spend most of my time on a computer working.” To that end, Mackensen sourced furniture and décor from a variety of retailers, including Z Gallerie, Restoration Hardware, and West Elm, and used a mix of textures and finishes. The designer says, “I knew Desi wanted a space to showcase her YouTube Award, and I also started watching her videos and could see her playful personality, her dedication to the beauty industry, and her sense of fashion. All of these things influenced me to design a space that was fashionable, functional, and playful.”
