When I lived in Italy (#bragging—sorry), I probably drank four to five cups of coffee per day. Granted, they were of the espresso kind, but for me, consuming that amount of caffeine a day didn't bode well for my health or my brain. I felt jittery, and I would often feel anxious and not sleep. Fast-forward six years and I (think) I've figured out how many cups per day I can handle: One in the morning and the occasional midafternoon cup (if I'm flagging). The thing is, though, that it's taken me a while to figure this out, and I know I'm not alone in wondering how many cups is too many.
We're constantly told about the advantages drinking of coffee—from reportedly helping with fat burning to lowering the risk of type 2 diabetes—but rarely do we hear that it's also been linked to disadvantages such as hormonal acne, heart disease and cancer. As with anything, I'm sure the best thing to do is have coffee in moderation, which is why this new caffeine calculator is such a great idea.
According to Bustle, the calculator is currently being formulated by the U.S. military and claims to help you work out how much coffee you need to keep you awake, depending on how much sleep you got the night before. Why the U.S. military? Well, apparently 40% of the people in the U.S. military are sleep-deprived and get under five hours of sleep a night (no wonder they're searching for answers).
Not only will the calculator factor in how much caffeine a regular sleep-deprived person needs in order to feel awake, but it'll also show the impact different measures of caffeine have on each individual person. It's currently unavailable to the public, but they are licensing the technology so that it can (hopefully) be available in an app soon. Until then, we'll be carefully monitoring our caffeine intake as best as we can.
