For many, drinking coffee is a lifestyle—one that subsists on 12-hour workdays and a never-ending mountain of work. But contrary to what Gilmore Girls and all of the coffee merch would lead you to believe, there is such a thing as too much coffee. "Research indicates that ingesting too much caffeine (500 to 500 milligrams, or 5 or more cups of coffee) can cause anything from restlessness to muscle tremors," writes Business Insider. Keep the following unwelcome side effects in mind next time you order that double shot of expresso:
It can make your breathing shallow. Too much caffeine can release your stress-triggered adrenaline hormone, which increases your heart rate, elevates your blood pressure, and shortens your breath. What's more, as with any upper, you're going to crash later.
It can make you irritable and anxious. Shallow breathing can result in a lack of oxygen to your brain, which manipulates your emotions in more ways than one. You may experience irritability, anxiety, and even irrationality, both during the caffeine high and as you go through withdrawal.
It can cause insomnia. On average, it takes 24 hours for coffee to work its way through your system. So drinking too much coffee in the late afternoon or before bed can wreak havoc on your REM cycle. Of course, this lack of sleep can further exacerbate the aforementioned symptoms.
