When the midday slump hits, the default is to turn to a cup of coffee (or two). The same goes for an early morning following a restless night or a long work day. Sometimes, we just need a little extra energy to get through the day. But while caffeine is the universal energizer, the wellness conscious are turning to alternative methods, from juicing to vitamins. And while we're not advocating giving up coffee altogether, we see no harm in trying alternative methods to give us an extra boost in the morning.
"Citrus essential oils have a beautiful effect on our energy levels by stimulating happiness and positivity," Sara Panton, CEO and co-founder of Vitruvi, told us. "I love using citrus in the morning (along with my morning coffee) to increase energy and awareness. Beyond citrus, I also love using herbal oils like peppermint and eucalyptus for an energy boost. They both help promote deep breathing by opening up the lungs, which in turn results in oxygenating the brain and leads to an increase in energy and alertness." Want to know her favorite essential oils for energy and exactly how to use them? She gives us the low-down.
Use Them in the Shower
"Turn your morning shower into a ritual that smells like a eucalyptus spa experience," suggests Panton. "Just add three drops of eucalyptus oil to the palm of your hands while in the shower. Rub your hands together and allow the aroma to release. Breathe deeply."
"Eucalyptus essential oil has been used traditionally in Australia for hundreds of years as a natural herbal medicine, as well as to help increase alertness amongst warriors. It reminds the brain to take deep breaths, which is the reason it is used in spa steam rooms."
Use Them as a Face Oil
"Add two drops of grapefruit essential oil to your existing moisturizer or add four drops to one tablespoon of jojoba oil for a brightening and completely natural face oil that will create a fresh glow," she recommends.
"Filled with naturally occurring vitamin C, this rejuvenating essential oil can brighten your moisturizer or your mood."
Energize Your Mind
"Energize your mind and wake up naturally each morning by adding three drops of peppermint and two drops of rosemary essential oil to your morning shampoo and conditioner to stimulate the scalp," recommends Panton. "It tingles and smells super fresh, and rosemary essential oil is also thought to help with the strength and health of hair follicles."
"A fresh, bright essential oil that instantly leaves you feeling more awake. Mint is fresh and cooling and is great for providing energy. It can naturally perk you up during the winter months and is incredibly refreshing during the summer."

"The aroma of lemon has a carefree, happy vibe—just like lemonade. Lemon essential oils are often used in cleaning products because they have natural antibacterial properties and also because they are associated with freshness and upbeat energy (much like a clean house!)."
"While slightly sweet, the aroma of orange is synonymous with summer and energy. Orange essential oil has been shown to stimulate positivity and is categorized as a happy aroma."
