Whenever I travel back to Athens in the middle of summer, I consider two things. Is there a pool available, and can I see the Acropolis from my hotel? On a recent trip with my husband to visit our family, I found just the place.
Mr and Mr's Smith's The Fresh Hotel is perfect for either a brief stop-over in Athens or as your base while you island-hop throughout the Greek Islands. We tied a two-day stay in Athens onto the end of our trip to Milos and it was so easy to be able to get around the city from a central location.
I recommend exploring Athens on foot (that is if you can cop the dry heat in the middle of summer), and within walking distance from The Fresh Hotel you'll find Monastiraki Flea Market (a maze of antiques and souvenirs), the Acropolis and Acropolis Museum (get there early to beat the crowds), Syntagma Square (an important political monument) and Plaka (where you can find some of the best souvlaki in Greece).
At the end of a long, hot day of sightseeing and shopping, there's nothing better than arriving back to the hotel and having a dip in the rooftop pool followed by an Aperol Spritz on the sun-lounger. The Fresh Hotel also offers dinner on the rooftop at its Air Lounge Bar , where you can enjoy traditional meals (order the Cretan Dakos salad) while the Acropolis, and all its ancient history glitters in the background.
Below, take a tour of the hotel, and peek some of the sights we saw within walking distance.
The rooftop is exactly where you'll want to spend every afternoon for a cocktail as the sun goes down.
We'd use the pool morning and night. Right after breakfast for a quick dip, and in between cocktails in the afternoon. If you want some shade, ask the staff to bring out a beach umbrella.
The hotel offers bright, fresh rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows. We had a balcony that showed the breathtaking views of the city.
This is me! At Monastiraki Flea Markets, a short 10-minute walk from the hotel. I picked up a bunch of shell necklaces as I'd just seen Leandra Medine wearing them on Instagram.
This is at the top of Lycabettus Hill Church. It's quite a hike, so we got up really early at 6am to not feel the heat, but the reward is the most incredible view of Athens.
