Camping might conjure images of humid tents, buzzing insects, and sweaty sleeping bags, but W Hotel’s new glamping suite proves this beloved American pastime can be surprisingly comfortable—and stylish. We recently took a live tour of the Outdoor Glamping Suite nestled in Midtown Manhattan and spoke to Kimberly Winthrop, Laurel & Wolf’s interior designer behind the colorful décor. If you can’t make it to New York City to spend a night under the stars, follow Winthrop’s top tips to create a luxury glamping experience without leaving home.
Dreaming of a natural escape but stuck with a concrete balcony or patio? Winthrop says the fastest way to give your space a mini oasis makeover is by laying soy grass. “You just cut it to fit your space and unroll it like carpet,” she says. “Just make sure it’s anchored at the corners so no one trips.”
The best bit? Unlike real grass, it’s surprisingly low-maintenance and will last for up to 20 years. “All the water from rain will drain out. You can hose it down, vacuum it, rake it. It’s very durable,” she explains.
It wouldn’t be glamping without a chic tent or teepee. Winthrop opted for a large round yurt when decorating W Hotel’s terrace, but a smaller fabric tent might be a more realistic option for your balcony or patio. “We found this online and built it in about 40 minutes,” she says. “It was surprisingly easy.”
Finally, adorn your tent with plush accents like embroidered cushions or Persian rugs to create a space you’ll want to relax in. “Bright colors are great for outdoor areas to offset green grass,” says Winthrop of the tangerine, yellow, and sky-blue throw cushions she chose. “Be playful with your choices and just have fun with it!”
