With the goal of making the space feel "warm, cozy, and lived-in," as well as prêt for entertaining, the design duo divided the space into two informal seating areas with low-slung pieces, including a black leather chair by Brazilian designer Sergio Rodrigues and a cream linen sofa from Brenda Antin. "Michael likes a lot of seating options and areas for conversation, so we made sure to include comfy sofas, chairs, and ottomans that really invite you to sit down and make yourself comfortable," says Stanley.
As Meldman is somewhat of a preservationist, it was important to the designers to maintain the room's original character. "Apart from furnishings and a bit of paint and wallpaper, we didn't want to compromise the integrity or authenticity of the library," she says. "We kept all of the original bookshelves intact and just gave them a fresh update with pure white paint and backing them with a woven, textured wall covering. We tried to keep the historic characteristics while also giving it a comfortable and lived-in appearance, which is exactly what Michael would want."
While many show house designers opt for bespoke pieces, Stanley and Furst decided to shop readymade and antique or vintage pieces, including compass-shaped sconces designed by Blackman Cruz, linear chandeliers from Bourgeois Boheme, a vintage Lucite backgammon table, and vintage antelope and elk taxidermy. "I find that custom pieces often take too long to manufacture, and I prefer a quick turnaround so that my clients get what they desire and need relatively quickly," says Stanley. "I also love seeing things in a space and having options to choose from, so shopping the room was my go-to for this space in particular."The Greystone Mansion Showcase House is open to the public for viewing in Beverly Hills through Nov. 24 -- find more details here.
