Walking into a Costco can be an overwhelming experience—you're surrounded by towering rows of frozen food, produce, and snacks, not to mention all the free samples. But as Self reports, it's always best to go grocery shopping with a plan, preferably one that's registered dietitian–approved. While the wholesale store houses plenty of junk food (in bulk, no less), the below snacks are reportedly among the "healthiest goodies you'll find in the superstore." Read up on the healthy items dietitians add to their Costco grocery lists below.
Lindsey Pine, MS, RD, owner of Tasty Balance Nutrition, is "currently obsessed with roasted seaweed snacks," she told the magazine. "They are the perfect snack when you're craving something crunchy and salty but want something low in calories." Plus, they're a great source of calcium and vitamins A, C, and B12.
"The individual packaging [of these snacks] keeps the guac fresh and makes it easy to take on the go," explains Sarah-Jane Bedwell, RD, LDN, and host of Cooking With Sarah-Jane. She recommends pairing this great source of healthy fat with a side of veggies or whole-wheat grain chips.
Of all the fruit bars sold at Coscto, Pressed by Kind's Mango Apple Chia and Cherry Apple Chia bars are dietitian Amy Gorin's favorites. "Both of these bars are great for stashing in your purse for midday fuel, and each bar delivers two servings of fruit and a good supply of fiber."
Costco's clementines are second on Bedwell's list of her favorite healthy treats. "You can get a five-pound bag at Costco, so you can always have a healthy snack on hand," she tells the magazine. Stock up on Halos for a portable, peelable snack that's chock-full of vitamin C.
Pine regards Marcona as "the queen of almonds," and she loves Costco's roasted variety (they're typically fried in Spain). Stock up on these for a filling and subtly sweet snack brimming with protein, fiber, and healthy fats.
