At approximately 10 p.m. EDT yesterday, Hillary Clinton became the first-ever female leader of a major political party in the United States. She accepted the party’s nomination with “humility, determination, and boundless confidence in America’s promise,” she said, ushering a roar of applause from the audience.
“Standing here as my mother’s daughter and my daughter’s mother, I’m so happy this day has come,” she remarked. “Happy for grandmothers and little girls and everyone in between. Happy for boys and men, too—because when any barrier falls in America for anyone, it clears the way for everyone.”
Clinton thanked a laundry list of supporters in her historic speech, including daughter Chelsea, husband Bill, friend President Obama, friend and first lady Michelle Obama, running mate Tim Kaine, and even former opponent Bernie Sanders. Aside from her commitment to providing affordable healthcare and tackling student debt, Clinton has long promised to be a champion for women’s rights, declaring, “when there are no ceilings, the sky’s the limit.”
