It's easy to get caught up in the whirl of planning a wedding in the months leading up it and momentarily forget why you're walking down the aisle in the first place—your S.O. It's for this reason that couples are choosing to go on a mini vacation before their ceremony when stress levels reach fever pitch. Travel insiders are dubbing it the "earlymoon" or "premoon."
"We are seeing an uptick in couples heading to wellness resorts for premoon before they get married, on average about a week or so," says Erina Pindar, managing director of SmartFlyer. "The goal is to be together before the festivities, to get healthy, and to take good care of body and mind to get ready for the biggest event of their lives."
Luxury hotels are noticing an influx of soon-to-be-newlyweds, too. "Pre-moons are becoming increasingly more popular," agrees Lydia Redmond, wedding expert at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples. "They are a perfect way for couples to decompress from the wedding-planning process. The trip should be effortless and the destination should be easy to access."
It's not just limited to domestic travel, though. DJ Hannah Bronfman spent time with fiancé Brendan Fallis at SHA Wellness Clinic in Spain before her destination wedding in Morocco, and Pippa Middleton flew to St. Barth's before saying "I do."
Contemplating an earlymoon? Consider these five European destinations to relax, recharge, and reconnect.
Skip Lisbon and Lagos and head straight to Duoro Valley. The world's first officially designated wine region has much more to offer than excellent port. Spend a few nights at Six Senses Douro Valley and try the Nest Rest Meditation, a guided session held in a cocoon-like pod suspended from a tree in the estate forest.
Beloved by Emily Ratajkowski, who stayed at the property during her recent trip to Italy, Hotel Il Pellicano oozes old-school Italian glamor. Hire a boat, take a cooking class, or simply soak up some rays on one of the hotel's iconic canary yellow–and-white striped sun loungers.
