You're 5 Steps Away From a Luxury Hotel-Level Bed

Let’s face it: While we love Airbnbs as much as the next modern traveler, we have to admit we have a soft spot for a beautiful, luxurious hotel. After all, who doesn’t love to order room service or take advantage of all the extravagant amenities a resort has to offer?

But perhaps the best part of any hotel stay is the bed. With crisp sheets and a duvet so comfy it feels otherworldly, most hotel beds make it feel like you’re sleeping on an actual cloud. And no matter how much time we spend fluffing our pillows or mastering the art of hospital corners, we seriously struggle with recreating that cloud-like feel in our own home.

So what’s the deal? Why are hotel beds so ridiculously comfortable? For Jean Louis Magron, a general manager of Vista Encantada Spa Resort & Residences in Cabo San Lucas, a great bed offers the groundwork for a peaceful, pleasant vacation.

“Hotel beds are extremely comfortable as we want everyone to enjoy their vacations in full, starting with an incredible sleep on a dream-come-true bed,” he says. “We spend a lot of time studying our beds and perfecting the sleep experience we offer our guests.”

While every hotel has a secret recipe for the dream bed, Magron is sharing some tips for creating a hotel-like set up in your space. (Psst… no chocolates on pillows required.)

1. Start With a Cozy Mattress

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: A great mattress is one of the biggest—if not, the biggest—investments you can make for your bedroom. From clocking in some zzz’s after a long day at work to catching up on your favorite TV shows, it’s no secret we all spend a lot of time in bed. So why not invest in a mattress worthy of a five-star hotel?

“Our mattresses are Heavenly Beds, which include memory foam and goose feathers to guarantee a perfect sleep,” Magron.

But while a great mattress is many hotels' secret ingredient for a good night’s sleep, you might not want to fork over hundreds of dollars to replace your perfectly nice mattress. For a plush bed, minus the price tag, consider adding a mattress topper to your setup.

2. Prioritize Your Comforter

It feels like the bedding industry will be in a never-ending debate on whether or not thread count matters–and which types of materials to layer on your mattress—but one thing’s for sure: Your comforter matters.

You know that soothing sensation you feel whenever you slip into a hotel bed? You know, as if you dove feet-first into a cocoon of cotton balls and clouds? That all comes from the comforter.

“Use a down comforter with a cotton duvet,” Magron recommends.

Sure, a comforter might be essential for your hotel-like bed, but do you figure out which style is the best for you? Simply put, all comforters are not created equal. While some styles feature a lighter fill and are therefore ideal for warm sleepers, heavier comforters are ideal for those who run cold overnight.

When it comes to the perfect duvet for you, Magron recommends factoring in your sleep preferences.

“The weather at home might not be the same as at the resort or vacation destination,” he explains.

3. Pile on the Pillows

Can you ever have too many pillows? As Magron puts it, not really.

A plethora of pillows will not only give your head and neck the support they need but will also help the cozy vibes flow from head to toe.

“Adding two to four pillows—and even a few additional decorative ones—will make your bed look and feel like one at a five-star hotel,” he says.

Go ahead, accessorize your pile of pillows with some exquisite shams.

4. Wow With White

Whether you’re living la vie en rose in Paris, scarfing down sushi in Kyoto, or relaxing at an all-inclusive resort in Hawaii, there’s a good chance most of the hotels you’ve stayed at boast crisp, white sheets.

Not to knock colored and patterned sheets, but there’s something indisputably pristine and oh-so-luxurious about a set of crisp white sheets.

“Make your bed at home feel like a five-star hotel bed by sticking to predominantly all-white bedding,” Magron recommends.

If you can’t give up your bold, maximalist ways, accessorize with some printed throw pillows. Now the only thing left to do is figure out how to keep your sheets as clean as possible. Might we recommend keeping food outside of the bathroom and investing in a stain remover?

5. Accessorize With a Nightstand

Mattress? Check. Duvet? Of course. Pillows? You’ve gotten plenty. But do you have an equally impressive nightstand?

Sure, a beautiful, well-organized bedside table won’t guarantee a good night’s sleep, but it can help give your entire bedroom a hotel-like quality.

“Your bedside table is also an important part of your bed and sleep experience,” Magron says. “It should hold your essentials for your nighttime ritual but also look as an accent for the room. It’s important to keep it organized and clean from clutter.”

And if you have enough space, a small vase with flowers will offer a five-star finishing touch.
