As one of the largest and most important organs, your liver is essentially your body's natural filtration system and the leading force behind metabolic function. That being said, it's also the body part that's most in need of a cleanse. Enter Jessica Sepel, an Australia-based nutritionist and author of Living the Healthy Life, who recently shared her liver detox plan with My Body+Soul. Sepel recommends cutting out the following seven foods for three full days to fully cleanse your liver:
- Refined sugar and sweeteners
- Wheat and gluten
- Red meat
- Trans fats (like those found in vegetable oils, processed foods, and deep-fried foods)
Instead, Sepel recommends filling up on seasonal veggies, fresh berries, green apples, nuts and seeds, high-quality fish, organic eggs and chicken, gluten-free grains like quinoa, and coconut oil or extra-virgin olive oil for cooking. Diet aside, it's also important to exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, drink lots of water to flush out toxins, and get at least eight hours of sleep per night. Finally, remember to set aside some extra "me" time.
"When we cleanse, our bodies flush out toxins and sometimes this can cause certain emotions to rise," she writes. "We feel more sensitive, maybe a little more vulnerable, so make sure you set aside time for you."
