While we all want to see instant results when we test out new diets, we still know it's consistent healthy eating over the long term that yields successful (and sustainable) outcomes. Still, a slow and steady process doesn't mean you won't see results. Even if you haven't necessarily adopted a clean eating regimen but want to shed a few pounds before the holidays, by simply swapping out a few simple choices in your everyday diet you'll be able to cut a significant number of calories.

Reduce the size of your coffee. If you don't take your coffee black, you'd be surprised by just how many calories are in your daily cup of joe. Lattes and cappuccinos can have as much as 100 calories, so if you simply opt for a smaller size, you could drop about 50 calories easily. Forgo any sugar and that's another 12 to 20 gone.

Abstain from sauces and spreads. Mayo, ketchup, salad dressings, and butter all add unnecessary calories to your intake. Reduce sauces and spreads when you can, and opt for healthier alternatives like olive oil or lemon when topping off your salads. If you dine out, the extra sauces can be particularly problematic, so be sure to order sauces on the side.

Purchase portion-controlled snacks and treats. If you like to treat yourself to something sweet or a little snack, you don't have to cut it out entirely. Just make sure you're stocked up with pre-portioned options that have 100 calories or fewer per serving. This will prevent you from mindless eating if you're enjoying something sweet while watching TV.

Swap your fruit out for a vegetable. If you snack on fruit throughout the day, swap out at least one for a vegetable instead. While fruits are healthy, vegetables are packed with even more nutrients and have fewer calories.
