A strict sleep regimen won't even save you from those dreaded 3 a.m. wake-up calls, but fortunately, there are ways to quickly lull yourself back to sleep. According to Ellen Vora, a holistic psychiatrist and sleep expert, the key is in a spoonful of coconut oil. "If I'm hungry or headachy, a little blood sugar support is what my body needs to fall back asleep," writes Vora of her nighttime routine. "I keep a jar of coconut oil and a spoon next to my bed, and I take a spoonful, barely even opening my eyes, then lie back down."
Vora recently chronicled her nightly routine in an article for MindBodyGreen, with a particular focus on the elusive 3 a.m. "wake-up solution." Despite her credentials as a sleep therapist, Vora admits that she's far from perfect in the sleep department and often finds herself awake in the middle of the night like the rest of us. In these moments, she simply assesses what her body seems to need and proceeds accordingly.
"Sometimes I just need a sip of water or a pit stop. I have an orange night light set up in the bathroom to avoid having to turn on any lights," she clarifies. "If I'm stressed and my mind is racing, I cut my losses: I turn on the salt lamp, put on the orange glasses, get out a pen and paper, and write out a list of what's on my mind. Sometimes this is the only way to quiet my mind. Once I get everything down on paper, I go back to sleep easily."
