Believe it or not, happiness is a choice—whether you decide to spend your years analyzing the past, worrying about the future, or pursuing your best life today is entirely up to you. That being said, there are some life habits you can adopt to set yourself up on the right path. Illuminated by research from University of Pennsylvania psychologist Martin Seligman, Business Insider has outlined some actionable tips to help you on your journey to becoming your healthiest, happiest self. Here are their three most interesting insights:
Surround yourself with good people
Rather than trying to fit in with any one group of people, make it a point to surround yourself with people who make you feel good. "Surrounding yourself with happy people builds confidence and stimulates creativity," writes BI. "Hanging around negative people has the opposite effect—they want people to join their pity party." Who you choose to hang out with says a lot about who you are, so make sure those people are an accurate reflection of your values.
create your own happiness
Many people either reflect on what they wish they could change in their past, or look to their future for good fortune. But happiness lies in the present moment—and the power to create it is in your hands. "Every second you waste waiting for happiness is a second you could have been using to create it," writes BI. "The happiest people aren't the luckiest, wealthiest, or best-looking; the happiest people are those who make an effort to be happy."
live in the moment
Living in the moment will give you a newfound appreciation for all the little things in life, however mundane. "It's impossible to be happy if you're constantly somewhere else, unable to fully embrace the reality (good or bad) of this very moment," concludes BI. Try reading up on mindfulness and start by accepting and embracing the pitfalls of your past.
