If you can impart one business lesson to your children in your lifetime, it should be to never underestimate the power of persuasion. That's according to Inc.'s Jeff Haden, author of The Motivation Myth, who argues that the key to success lies in your ability to persuade others to follow your lead and believe in your cause.
"Being persuasive doesn't mean you have to manipulate or pressure other people," he explains. "At its best, persuasion is the ability to effectively describe the benefits and logic of an idea to gain agreement—and that means we all need to be more persuasive. That's why the art of persuasion is critical in any business or career—and why successful people are extremely good at persuading others."
To teach your children this valuable business lesson without crossing into the manipulation territory, he recommends the following five steps: Teach them how to properly structure an argument, emphasize the importance of confidence, tell them to always speak slowly when giving a presentation, focus on the positive outcomes, and most importantly, "teach your kids not to just say they're right, teach them how to be right," adds Haden. "Teach them to win the day because their data, reasoning, and conclusions are beyond reproach. The art of persuasion should simply be the icing on an undeniably logical cake."
