No one wants to date a cheater. The problem is that we often don’t think about our partner being unfaithful until we’re in a relationship and fully committed to our S.O. (read: already totally attached). In fact, a recent study revealed that a whopping percentage of married individuals—almost 60% of men and more than 45% of women—cheat on their spouses. A new article written by Madeleine A Fugère, PhD, a professor of social psychology and the co-author of The Social Psychology of Attraction and Romantic Relationships ($39), suggests we can see the signs of cheating early on (in men), even before we enter into a monogamous relationship.
It’s all about keeping your eyes open: There is one very strong indicator that a man is a cheater, and you can figure it out just by looking at his face. Research has indicated that men with more masculine features are more likely to have cheated in the past. (You shouldn’t only rely on this detail, but if you see other signs that seem off when it comes to a future partner, make sure to trust yourself). Another red flag is if your potential plus-one tends to over drink, which is defined as consuming more than five alcoholic drinks at one event. When you’re drunk, you tend to lose your inhibitions, and this often leads to flirting and infidelity.
So the next time your date throws down drink after drink at dinner, be wary.
