Organised Women Use These Hacks to Spring Clean in Minutes

How to Spring Clean Within Minutes
Steve Cordony

Unless you're Marie Kondo, cleaning probably isn't high on your fun list. But since it's something we all have to do, we want to make sure we use our precious time effectively. Since we're currently in the thick of spring cleaning season, we've been trialling all the cleaning methods that might make the task an easier one. Recently, we tried the 20/10 rule—the practice of cleaning for 20 minutes and resting for 10—as well as attempting to "gamify" the process by looking around for 10 things out of place, then putting them back (with a reward after doing so, of course).

But if you're after smaller ways to ensure your home looks its shiniest and at its best this spring, it could be time to rethink the way you see cleaning. For example, instead of allocating one huge chunk of time, decide on little things to do throughout the week to maintain your space.

Since we'd rather be baking, or catching up on our long list of books to read, here are four ways to help you clean faster and get back to some serious relaxation.

USE THE DISHWASHER FOR MORE THEN DISHES

Other than making doing the dishes after dinner a more seamless process, a dishwasher can actually be used for cleaning many other household items. POPSUGAR Australia lists everything from hairbrushes to pet toys, sponges, and even your smaller refrigerator shelves as items that are dishwasher-safe.

DUST YOUR SURFACES WITH A LINT ROLLER

Dusting is an inevitable part of the cleaning process, but instead of brushing dust everywhere, use your handy lint roller and run it over tricky surfaces, such as lampshades, desk nooks, and even your couch. Doing this once a week—maybe while you're waiting for your dinner to heat up—will ensure you never need to spend an entire day dusting, and therefore, sneezing again.

STORE CLEANING PRODUCTS IN EVERY ROOM

Part of what makes cleaning such a cumbersome task is the preparation. Finding the right sprays and devices is enough to make us procrastinate with a book instead. But by having the right supplies within reaching distance, you're more likely to give the bathroom basin a quick wipe, or clean down the mirror as you go about your daily routine. Also, if you've only got a few minutes to spare before you run out the door, you can select the few things that need doing, and get to them, stat. This also means, when you designate time to clean, all the little (slightly annoying) tasks are already done.

USE BASKETS TO YOUR ADVANTAGE

There's no denying it, despite how much we try to adopt the minimalist lifestyle, there are those items that don't quite belong anywhere, or don't look chic in our homes but we need none the less (iPad charging cables, we're looking at you). Find smart storage solutions (such as a woven basket or stylish box) that will fit inside your console or shelving unit. That way at the end of the week, when you need to clean up quickly, you don't need to deliberate about where you can put your troublesome item—just store it.
