Tips for Staying Healthy During the Holidays
@jshealth

Let’s be honest, Christmas can be bittersweet. First, you have the joy of eating perfectly-orchestrated meals with the sole intention of filling you to the brim, but then comes the aftermath: Knowing that a week full of drinking and eating has almost railroaded your entire fitness efforts for the year. Sound familiar?

We are all about moderation, so, when we saw that nutritionist and INF / Network member Jessica Sepel believes you can enjoy the holiday season, and still stay healthy without depriving yourself, we were on board.

See below for how Sepel manages to enjoy the holidays but still keep health and fitness at the top of mind. Anyone else suddenly craving some gingerbread?

HAVE THE TREAT, JUST IN MODERATION

Sepel says that is in fact OK to treat yourself, "Don’t deprive yourself, you’ll only be frustrated and more likely to overeat later." Sepel also suggests choosing one indulgent item and savouring it mindfully instead of mindlessly eating your entire stocking in one sitting.

HAVE HEALTHY SNACKS ON HAND AT ALL TIMES

Sepel says that preparation is key, and to “eat a healthy, satiating snack before you go to a party.” This way you are not ravenous when you get there, and overcompensating for your hunger, by dipping into the chip bowl.

PRIORITISE EXERCISE AND REST

While sticking to a normal sleep routine can be tricky as your schedule fills up, Sepel believes that it’s key to helping prioritise overall wellness. "Aim for eight hours whenever possible, since holiday parties will make this difficult some nights." She also suggests to "go into the 'Stress-Free Zone'—spend at least 10 minutes every day by yourself doing something that relaxes you. In terms of exercise, Sepel encourages us to keep up with our regular routine, “staying in a routine will mean it’s not as hard to get back on track after the holidays—no need to make this a New Year’s resolution!”
