When we heard that Homepolish's Jae Joo designed an industrial Williamsburg loft, we knew it would be cool beyond belief. Not only is it extremely hip, but it's also bursting with personal style and charm, thanks to both the designer and the couple in residence. The owners, Brooke Hammel and Jose Alvarez, called upon Homepolish to help their space reach its full potential.
Though the home had incredible bones to work with (20-foot ceilings, concrete floors, and exposed brick, to name a few covetable qualities), it also required a lot of changes. It was previously an Esquire Shoe Polish Factory, so the makeover was lofty in more ways than one. Scroll through to see the finished product, complete with sporty accents, pop-culture references, and bohemian flare that collectively (and unexpectedly) result in a downtown cosmopolitan pad.
A Work Hard, Play Hard Office
The makeshift office is one of our favorite aspects in this apartment. Who needs a full-blown office when you can have all the necessities in one corner? When there aren't enough rooms to create a private study, try transforming a little nook like this one. We'll be the first to admit that a cool work environment with your favorite knickknacks makes the extra hours a lot more enticing.
That being said, the contrast between the sleek metal table and the colorful skateboards reminds us that work/life balance is crucial. And, as if we didn't think this desk was out of this world already, we just noticed the little Darth Vader mask peeking over the surface.
The smooth shape and cognac leather upholstery make this desk chair the perfect gentleman.
A Plush Bohemian Guest Room
This pup in residence has the right idea.… We'd snuggle up right next to him if we could. Aside from our furry friend, we also quite like the Moroccan mirrors flanking the bed. Unlike the other rooms in this loft, the guest room has a bohemian flare, making it perfectly unique and cozy.
For a similar vibe, try adding a textural dimension with layered rugs. Speaking of rugs, we encourage you not to shy away from bright colors. On the other hand, all-white bedding with embellished details guarantees a stylish bedroom.
This Moroccan-style mirror will fit into a wide range of décor themes. Thanks to its delicate frame, it won't overpower your space.
The Cool Kid's Eclectic Table
If Hogwarts hired top interior designers with advanced magic skills for a campus makeover, this is what the dining hall would look like. And this marble table would be reserved for the cool kids (Harry and his friends, duh). We love how the eclectic style takes notes from a variety of design traditions in an unexpected, chic way. You've got your Scandinavian seats, a regal buffet, minimalist candles, pop art, and industrial exposed brick.
These elements join forces to make something truly one of a kind—talk about magical. But even mere mortals can reap the benefits of this cool table since it's large enough to entertain a ton of guests. So when can we come over?
Here's a great centerpiece that'll work well with a dining, console, or coffee table. All you need to do is add an assortment of candles and say, "Abracadabra!"
A Bicoastal Lounging Corner
You get the best of both coasts with the California cool surfboard in this quintessential open-plan Brooklyn loft. As you can see, Hammel and Alvarez are major art fans and have a good eye for tasteful yet cheeky pieces. Plus, the surfboard adds an interesting touch. Never underestimate the power of whimsical decorative objects.
The exposed brick and concrete floors work so well because they're elevated by the rest of the furniture—the Hans Wegner chair dressed up with a sheepskin throw and the gallery wall in the distance.
The right surfboard will instantly add a sense of whimsy to your space.
