Though most of us don’t have this view from anywhere in our home, we can dream, right? Having some sort of view while you work out is always a huge plus and extra motivator, and therefore, creating your space near a window or some light is key.
“Don't underestimate the power of sunshine and brightness on your body,” Cutler says. "Having something to look at outside a window during the work out routine can really help.”
A Bold Graphic Wall
This small-yet-mighty space makes a great case for farmhouse-style doors. We love the attention-grabbing addition of the painted feather mural, which makes the space feel truly unique.
What’s great about this home gym space is that you can replicate it pretty much anywhere—even in a small corner of your home. The perfectly placed mirrors and floor mats really improve the flow of the room, and we love the small design elements like the potted plant and super cool corner stool.
Less is more when it comes to this minimalist home gym. We are loving the use of cowhide rugs (which are super easy to wipe down) and non-gym wood furniture.
Even if you're going for a minimalistic look, add auxiliary furniture to your at-home gym design and repurpose it for gym use. In one industrial-feeling home gym Cutler recently designed, he added a vintage safe that was repurposed as towel and weight storage. “Along with the industrial lighting, it really set the mood in the room and made the whole thing feel intentional,” he says.
Open and Airy
It should come as zero surprise that this stunning and scenic gym was designed by professional architects. The natural light pouring into the space is a perfect inspiration for a fresh workout, according to Cutler.
“A lot of people make the mistake of creating a gym in their spare room or basement," Cutler says. "Not only is it crowded, but usually lacks both proper natural and artificial light."
While many of us don’t have it in our budget to do a total home gym renovation, it serves as a reminder that a clean, uncluttered space with a view is the perfect space for a long ride.
A Busy Wall
If there is one place where a busy pattern can serve a purpose, it is the workout room. Cutler suggests any addition of color in your space for an energizing feel.
“White and bright is good, but how about a fun color on the floor or even a cool photo mural on the wall?" he suggests. We think this black and white geometric maze will definitely get your adrenaline pumping.
This blast-to-the-past workout room is about as vintage as you can get—from the exposed brick walls and paint-chipped radiators to old-fashioned workout gear.
Mirror Walls for Miles
A clean space finished with a wall full of mirrors and one of glass will help you see your progress and dominate your workout.

“Most of what you put in your gym is predetermined, but this is no excuse to leave design at the door,” Cutler says. “A well-designed room can uplift and motivate you every bit as much as a pair of jeans that no longer fit.”
